Provides an indication of his complicated arrangements for visiting the area. Apologises for treating everyone shabbily: has to include Gillingham (Mrs Kenyon), Beccles (Fr Campbell), Bungay (Fr MacEvoy), Woodbridge and Wroxham (Traffords) in one visit with no motorcar available.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Write on his behalf to the correspondent asking about an Education Committee decision relating to her daughter who after a means test must pay all fees. Bishop p.s.: Pity to bother the Bishop - Fr Brookes should have written to her.
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Agrees that it is worth appealing to the full Education Committee. A case of discriminating against these children? CEC to send on relevant information.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Children attending St Benet's Primary School at Beccles from Walberswick and Southwold are asked to contribute £125: beyond their means having already bought school uniform. Can anything be done?
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Refers to Mr Missen's letter [of 30 August 1961]. LEA is within its authority to make the charges (and to pay them if it wishes). However, the Bishop has suggested that the money could be supported from several sources: Parents, Parish, Poor School's Fund, Catholic Education Council.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Congratulating Mr Loftus on the stand he is taking. Asks if he is aware of the Ministry of Education's manual upon which LEAs base their policy. Sends a copy. Reminding the Bishop of his offer of assistance. CEC grants only made once a tear in June.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Bishop has asked him to respond. Request information about the children for when he approaches Mr Missen, the Chief Education Officer.

Notes that there is a Conference of Catholic Councillors in Harrogate in October - theme "What can LEAs do for our Catholic Schools" . Encourage any catholic LEA members to attend?
"..all we can do is to try for better representation on public bodies and to cultivate good-will. The individual approach in quiet conversation with the Officials and elected Councillors would seem to be most productive of results."
Mrs Kenyon has arrange with Fr MacEvoy for you to go to Gillingham for Luncheon and return there after confirmation at Bungay. Arranging for the Bishop to be met at Norwich by either Mr Bunbury or Captain Throckmorton. There are 50 for confirmation.
Campbell, Henry Martin Dom OSBThose children who pass 11+ exam: girls to St Mary's, Lowestoft; boys have no Catholic grammar to go to. LEA will not pay full expenses for the girls. Can the LEA be persuaded to be more generous?
Innes, M Benet Rev OSB[Assumed to be writing to Canon Brewer]
Have gathered all the required information about Beccles and Bungay for the meeting with Mr Missen [Chief Education Officer, East Suffolk CC]. Unlikely that Beccles children will go here [Gorleston] because of distance and time. Miss Gaffney says only possibility would be hostel accommodation. Keep Bungay out of it until we see how the discussion goes.
Cllr Loftus is trying to get the LEA will continue as before.
Rudd, Francis J Rev (-1973)Minister of Education [Florence Gertrude Horsbrugh, Baroness Horsbrugh, GBE, PC (13 October 1889 – 6 December 1969)] writing to an MP, Edward Evans CBE, [MP for Lowestoft] who had forwarded a letter from Fr Innes about the school transportation for a pupil, Joseph Graziano. Decisions on an appropriate school for a pupil are made against known criteria and she has no reason to question the Norfolk LEA decision.
Education (Government Department)Making a new survey of the situation and in contact with Councillor Loftus whose own child is involved.
East Suffolk CCThe situation arises out of private arrangements for the convenience of the parents in getting their children to Beccles school and the need for the county to re-tender for the contract of transportation. This highlighted the local arrangements and the increase in the cost of providing a larger coach .
Canon Brewer's manuscript annotation: "My Lord Bishop / This would seem to be a case for help form the CEC [Catholic Education Council] / Parents do something / Parish must contribute something / CEC would pay the balance. / What do you advice? ATB."
