Abbot Richard Yeo thanking the Bishop for helping in the release of a priest for a long retreat at Belmont. Also for lining up "all sorts of things in Beccles" - new liturgy, rededicating the altar, receiving converts and confirmations - should be pretty busy this weekend.
Aidan Slack, writing from Ushaw College, Durham, hopes to be ordained on Easter Monday. His first Mass will be at Mrs Kenyon's oratory at Gillingham Hall. Hopes to reconcile a lapsed Catholic there and requests faculties for Gillingham. manuscript annotation: Gave faculties for Gillingham Hall only."
Referring to an article from the Universe (17 July 1981), brought to the attention of the Sacred Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. They would know of the accuracy of this account. He describes the situation as contrary to principles establish in church doctrine. Would the Bishop send them the information requested?
Austin Treamer, AA, Provincial reminds Fr Reeman that they met outside Westminster Cathedral and asks if Brother Anselm Amps, due to finish his Theology studies, may be ordained in March, his old parish church. Superior General has granted his ordination. Treamer is writing in advance of contacting the Bishop to gain the parish priest's approval.

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)
Meetings of the Working Party on the Pastoral aspect of irregular marriages. Going to see Derek Worlock in Liverpool but should have done his homework for the meeting in 3rd week of October. Wrote to David Norris to criticise two statements in the draft Canon Law document on Marriage - must not use the word "murder" for abortion - guess what the other point was!
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)
Covering letter for a note on the proposal for handling mixed marriages. A stumbling block. May not stay on the International Commission [ARCIC?] is the Cardinal's proposals go through.

leave for non-fasting communion permission for Mrs Emmaline Ann Shauve. Tax to pay 5/1 (23 lira) to be sent to the Bishop for forwarding to Rome. Nothing for Sister Huberta, presumably gone to another congregation for the Religious.
Leave for non-fasting communion permission for Sister Huberta. Tax to pay 2/- (8 lira) to be sent to the Bishop for forwarding to Rome. This is unlimited use but only for times of illness.
Glad to hear Fr Heptonstall was not seriously injured in the accident. Sisters' Confessions are permitted provided a screen is rigged up between him and the penitent. Very few sea coast resort priests can get away during their season - so permission for a private retreat. Enclosed small cheque [for £5] for 10 masses for private intentions.
Apologies for slow response - away in Denmark with the Cardinal. Guideline should be encouraged . Thinks there can be a disability which is a physical barrier to receiving Holy Communion - in principle no disability is a barrier to receiving Holy Communion except where there is a physical impossibility. Leave the choice to the parents - their role should be underlined. In general I would want to give Holy Communion to all, but I think all cannot receive it because of a disability which is too severe to overcome.
Suggest Canons Burditt and Frost and Frs Philpot and Wace for Commission on the division of the [Northampton] Diocese. Downham Market is an issue on which we must stand - "whatever the personal holiness of Ossie (and God alone is the Judge here), he is corrupting a holy thing - and this is the hidden evil." Unwavering leadership is required. Confront Ossie with the obedience he owes, and, that the Pope has formally specified the circumstances in which the rite may be celebrated. Tony Sketch should be given Downham market as his charge and say a publicised Mass there. PPs (Aldeburgh, Wymondham, Felixstowe and Ipswich) make change-over on October 7th.
