Latin document mentioning: Jacob Shanahan, 45; Brigitta Shanahan, 35; Borris O'Leigh [sic] [Borrisoleigh] in county Tipperary, Ireland; now living in Great Yarmouth.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Repeats the content of the original letter from Rev Dr Franz Fellinger and encloses the interrogatory (not available) to be put to Mr B Boulos. The Bishop delegates Fr Courtney to do this in the presence of a responsible person to act as a notary.
Side 2, Notary's handwritten record of answers to the questions put:
"1. Yes I have been disarrayed.
- The accusation is false.
- Indignantly denies having been to house of prostitution
- Denies walking out with a dancing woman or any woman.
- It is not true denies both points of accusation

Delighted with the celebration of Fr Hyland's 25th Anniversary of his Ordination. Cannot attend as will be in Birkenhead to attend Bishop Gray's installation and staying on for a few days. He will offer Mass on 8th. Will ask Tony Rogers to represent him.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Booked 6 June 1991 for Confirmation. Haggle with James about Hemsby Youth Group visit - let him know what they expect. Wish you well with the Manifold matter.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Responding to the letter of 10th November. Discusses the good news that Fr Reid is training Eucharistic ministers and the need for proper training, recording and that the Bishop reserves commissioning for himself. Recommends a manual with workbook (Manual for Training Eucharistic Ministers by Debbie Jones - written for this Diocese but generally available). Bishop feels deeply that the Ministry of the Blessed Sacrament in not to be trivialised. He appreciates the Augustinian presence in Yarmouth and Clare. DPC was reasonably successful and is beginning to be appropriated [sic] by the Diocese.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Confirmation of existing convert. Bishop presumes that the priest receiving her did not follow the inbuilt rite of including Confirmation in the rite of Reception. Not normally delegated to priests. Except for urgency. Too late for tomorrow's Confirmation at St George's, Norwich. Bishop sets considerable store on the public administration of the Sacrament.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop's secretary writes on behalf of the Bishop: Fr Stratton is Extraordinary Confessor for Bletchley's Thornton College nuns; the Mother Superior has asked for a different priest as Fr Stratton has been unable to attend. Is he willing to relinquish this office? Fr Kennedy is helping out at Yarmouth and following a request from the nuns at Beccles for him to give conferences and hear their confessions, the Bishop is confused over what faculties to give, if any. The Bishop believed Fr Kennedy SJ to be an Army Chaplain but asks whether he is correct in his understanding and asks for more information. Also, confirms date of Bishop's visit to Yarmouth for Confirmation - 30 May at 3.30pm.
Bishop's OfficeThe Bishop is reluctant to allow leave to reserve the Blessed Sacrament at isolated places such as St Thomas More chapel in Hemsby. But as Fr Webb says it was justified last year then he grants permission provided due care is taken to see that the church is properly attended by a reliable person.
Bishop's OfficeHeaded "Private"; address given as Somerton Hall, near Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk. Discussing the requirements for a mixed marriage with the priests at "The Holy Angels, Norfolk Road, Bayswater" [probably St Mary of the Angels, Moorhouse Road, Bayswater, London]. As resident of the diocese he is asking the bishop to grant a dispensation to allow the marriage to take place at the church mentioned. Both parties are over 70 years old.
Manuscript annotation: "Sent a mixed marriage application form to be filled up [illegible] Fr Thompson July 6/26".
List of 14 Confirmation Candidates
Connolly, Sean RevAdvises Fr Courtney that he needs to contact the Bishop with full details of this mixed marriage and the agreement of the parties to his proposal for regularising it.
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Sr Mary Josephine, Great Yarmouth Convent, writing to Bishop regarding the priests the sisters should see for confession at the church.
Manuscript annotation: "Canon Drake / Fr Cornell[?] / Fr G Scott - Norwich; Fr O'Gorman & Ken from [?] Bury St Edmunds."
Marriage Dispensation naming "Jacobus Shanahan et Birgitta Shanahan" of Northampton Diocese. Dated 27 February 1924.
Manuscript note: "Executed March 4 / 24."
Encloses proposed readings for Confirmation Mass; draft order of service [not present]; list of candidates. Paul Maddison unable to attend, so John Shannon has asked Fr Connolly to MC in his place. There will be a celebration in the Hall.
Connolly, Sean RevFr Courtney enclosing Fr Freeland's letter to him, writes to the Bishop about why he did not ask for written evidence of their intent. He judges them to be sincere but the man is an impulsive and defiant character who may not take kindly to being reminded of his marriage's sterility or of his own possible impotence.
Courtney, Timothy Rev SJNote providing background the two enclosures: I. Petitinem ad acathol. Reconciliationem, II. Letter (Confidential) re Syrian, Boulos.
Fr Courtney makes it clear that since the Bishop did not specifically request it, the answers provided by Boulos were not on Oath. Just as well "... seeing that the truth was not well served." He quotes Can 1744
Letter to Bishop about needing a dispensation form to "regularise" a mixed marriage undertaken in a Registry Office on 15 February 1916 between a Salvationist (husband) and Catholic (wife). Letter contains many details about the circumstances which may lead the couple to agree to this, but unfortunately Fr Thompson has not left any Dispensation forms.
Manuscript annotation: "Cannot do it! Sent dispensation forms"
Returns the Patriarch's document with answers. No parochial seal, else he would have attached it. Note that the man's address is 26a, Regent Road and not 13 Marine Arcade (a shop/stall in the arcade).
Courtney, Timothy Rev SJFr Edward Rockliff has gone North to give a retreat and some Lenten missions and has left Fr Courtney to look after two Ne Temere cases. He wants to get them to the bishop soon. He then provides some background details of each case and states that Fr Rockliff is satisfied there are no impediments to progressing. Fr Rockliff having been an Army chaplain and served at the front gave one of the parties a good talking to, it is expected that this man will now behave himself.
Manuscript annotation: "Sent both Dispensations. No 2 being conditional on freedom and baptism. Mar 3/25"
Fr Dinley acknowledges June 15 for Confirmation. All well with parish and Convent.
Manuscript annotation: "Booked June 15/30."
