Councils that Hawkes needs to be very cautious than he is about the path he is treading. Your Deputy Director appointment is not an Executive appointment but one that Fr Birch has made himself. The new Director and the Marist Congregation have to be consulted. Clarifications: 1. cannot endorse proceeding to priesthood; 2. You are a Permanent Deacon with a licence for this Diocese; 3. Only wear the Franciscan habit on very restricted occasions- it is causing confusion.

Will allocate a chunk of "Ransom Money" for the first year plus trust you to allocate Dersingham collections to them with a grant from Hunstanton to cover the anticipated £1000 per year costs for Dersingham. Set up an account in your and Len's name which he could manage in situ; he will account to both Diocese and you.

Deacon Matthews has permission to preside at a Eucharistic Service, which is not a Mass - no deacon can say Mass, indeed the Bishop has no authority in Canon Law to allow it.

Understands the difficulties and is trying to do something about it: to relieve pressure on Deacon Matthews and to provide a priest for Sundays. Despite what is possible a full-time priest will not be provided for Dersingham.

Following telephone conversation, the Bishop will be seeing Deacon Matthews who will elaborate on the situation at Dersingham. Do not give up hope at St Cecilia's - might not be able to offer an instant solution, but at least more informed about the community's difficulties at Dersingham.

Bishop suggests Ged Clapson at the Catholic Communications Centre for the Deacon training, currently running a course at Wonersh. Noted the suggestions for Notre Dame School and the Norfolk & Norwich hospital.

Bishop confirms appointment to St Ives for James Fyfe. Fr Kerby is an excellent and very experienced parish priest. James Fyfe is to exercise his ministry in St Ives until the end of the year when the Bishop will be happy to ordain him. Need to talk in due course. Bishop considers 4 to 5 months should be enough time instead of a whole year. Suggests he get in touch with Fr Kerby to make the final arrangements.
in a postscript the Bishop mentions enclosing a small sum to help towards expenses and holiday.

A fast filling diary means that the Bishop cannot commit to a whole weekend. Sundays are particularly difficult since they are reserved for parish visits. On the weekend of 12-14 December, he has a special Mass for those preparing to be Permanent Deacons and a Confirmation Mass on Sunday.
