Part of Walsingham Shrine

Recording his appreciation of the effort to make the Pro-Nuncio's visit a marvellous success. Likes the idea of him closing the Martian Year and blessing the amenity block. the three of us to meet a long but regular intervals [to discuss religious support]

Points briefly, but not intended to be brusque.

  1. irresponsible to promote this distasteful campaign to induce a visit
  2. No decisions taken; matter surely on the agenda of the November Hierarchy Meeting; to involve Carding and Archbishop Worlock
  3. finances do not work out - the Irish still paying off a large debt [for the Papal visit to Knock]
  4. issues over meeting the Archbishop of Canterbury at Walsingham
  5. disparaging remarks about "taking out Lady to the Pope" do not deter Bishop Clark - she is more important than her shrine
  6. Fr Birch exaggerates. Canterbury visit (probably) of far greater significance
  7. Once the Hierarchy decided on priorities, Bishop will be clear and uncompromising - no blame nor chiding - his idea can be sold to the nation and a community which wants to glimpse the Pope
  8. "I am not letting you down..."

Insurance of the golden crown of the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham. An insured value of £10,000 for the statue which included £6,000 for the crown. You consider that the insured contents of the Slipper chapel is adequate to include the statue itself, but the crown being irreplaceable need not be insured. However whilst it is outside the control of the Diocese you want to insure it for the duration of the Papal visit. Premium is subject to agreement with Catholic National Mutual Ltd and that Papal Visit Ltd. should be debited for it.

[in French] Fr Allen is aware that the Bishop of Tarbes [Tarbes-et-Lourdes] [Henri Clément Victor Donze ] is to attend the National Anglican Pilgrimage to Walsingham with his friend the Anglican Bishop of London [Graham Douglas Leonard]. He extends an invitation to visit the Catholic Shrine during the visit. Fr Allen would be weighted to arrange for the Bishop to say Mass at the Slipper Chapel or the Chapel of Reconciliation.

Fr Birch expressed his great disappointment following his conversation with the Bishop that the Pope will not be visiting the Shrine. He provides a long list of arguments to show that the potential visit would not be impractical as obstacles have been considered and addressed. He wonders why the Pope could visit Knock with 2 months advance notice yet 2 years notice is not enough to plan a visit to Walsingham. He says this could be seen as a rejection of the National Shrine in England.

St-John Stevas claims the Pope intends to visit Walsingham. Fr Birch would like the Pope to be told about the ecumenical activities at the Shrine. He would like an audience with the Pope to present him with a plaque (pewter with ivory decoration) twinning Walsingham with Czestochowa in 1936 or 1949; and, to explain the history of origin of Walsingham.

[undated] Article by Donald Hilton. "The reader's columns of the EDP have shown that some Protestants were not only unenthusiastic about the visit but were critical that any Free Church minister should be involved." Generally critical article about the stances of the Roman Catholic Church but considers Catholics to be sisters and brothers in Christ.
