How are things going at Burnham Market? Bishop receives reports which are not accepted on face value. Are you happy in your charge? Are yo staying for longer than expected? It would be useful to know your plans as Bishop is doing his annual review of personnel. You have in mind considerable repair and decoration at St Henry's - tell the Finance Board of your proposals (costs, etc.).

Bishop say Fr Gerry Langley must have a housekeeper - but the house is very cold with no central heating. Bishop has said that Fr Langley is appointed to Blakeney until he can no longer manage. Real issue is Diocesan attitude to the house; without central heating it will be hard of Fr Langley and in due course make it difficult to attract another priest. Possibly £2,000 investment required - parish might fund this if they thought there is an intention to keep a resident priest at Blakeney? Asks Fr Wilson to think about it and get back soon.

Writing to the Bishop and Fr Bradley. Conrad Rawnsley describes himself as a heretic and religious abstinent but feels he is writing on behalf of the Burnham Market community against moving Fr Malecki on. He is a man of many parts and has demonstrated a "super human" ability to master many practical building skills. It is wrong to move him on before he can enjoy the rewards of his labours. If he were to stay then his knowledge & talents could be used to direct similar constructional and maintenance work in other dioceses.

Advise the Roman Catholics to accept a lease - a flexible arrangement with advantages for both sides. Terms of lease is for the Norwich Diocesan Board of Finance, but expect it be 99 year lease with no premium and a peppercorn rent. Roman Catholics to care and maintain the building; insure it for damage; alteration would be reported to the [Anglican] Diocese; clauses to limit use to worship and prevent disturbance of graveyard; allow relatives to tend graves. Commissioners prefer a sale than a gift.

Puts forward a number of reasons for having a change in Mass scheduling to include anticipatory masses, to space them out to allow for the tide and parishioners crewing boats, to assist visitors to attend Mass. Confirms central heating is "to be done commercially!" Planning permission is needed for a boiler house. Wants a garage but cannot have the wood and asbestos construction as there are restrictions set by the planners. to protect the Conservation Area. Describes changes within the Church: tabernacle moved; wood oiled; wall painted; new Stations of the Cross installed (awaiting the fifteenth from Florence); re-siting of altar planned. Bishop of Lynn has given permission for the use of St Nicholas Church (but must wait for the new vicar to arrive).

Bishop's UEA talk was good - question time response not so.
Accept invitation to serve on the Ecumenical Commission. Church roof needs an architect to investigate some deterioration. Ad Clerum 9/80 (c) (1) - wording emphasises current position that many parish priests hold that the parish is "theirs", whereas Fr Langley thinks a co-responsibility with the parishioners is the ambition of Vatican II, etc.

Mr Toller has been in touch for agent details to begin negotiating. Rev Isaacson's information has been passed to him. An official form of Redundancy of All Saints is being drafted and will be on public view for 6 weeks. Opposing comments will be investigated; there is a small, vociferous opposition. Rev Isaacson thinks it may be April / May before the Church is handed over. Fr Richmond is making a list of tasks to be done and hopes it will be within his financial scope.

Recently seen his Provincial in London to discuss his stay at Burnham. Originally Canon Hulme asked Fr Richmond to try and make the church a viable proposition. This has happened. When the Marists came to Walsingham he thought he'd have to move on but they asked him to stay. But, the situation is difficult for Fr Murphy, even though he allows him to continue - recently adding bell and belfry. Also looks after USAF base at Sculthorpe. Provincial thinks Fr Richmond should leave - but will be seeing Fr Murphy soon about painting the outside of the church and will make everything clear to him then.

Photocopy of an exchange of letters
Top half: Fr Richmond to Fr Wilson [undated] - Taking over All Saints will involve expenses; expanding St Henry's might involve greater expenditure
Lower Half: Fr Wilson says that with £2,700 on deposit and £1100 in the bank there is sufficient to cover the work recommended by Mr Toller. If not, then the Diocese can help out.
