Annie Allnutt congratulates the Bishop n withholding consent to start building in Southwold. She is concerned over the low level of involvement of Mr & Mrs Crimmen in the recent visit by the Bishop, given their generosity in time and resources for the Mission. Asks the Bishop to be quite sure that Fr Mason is the right priest in the right place. Comments on his approach to certain congregation members of good standing - her own "unpardonable sin is that I advised Fr Mason some years ago to quit Southwold at once and seek a post in the Bishop's House where he would have work and supervision; he being young, full of life and animal spirits and fond of the good things in life." Comments that the building fund has not increased in years (except for the £100 donated by the Bishop) in spite of fund raising events.

Canon Gerard Collins writes: Lease with Mr Stebbings. Need clarity from Fr Mossey over the intention of the tenant to pay extra rent for a renewal? Bishop concerned that offering an additional seven years at £50 per year may not be best value for money in the long term. Furthermore better not to commit when the future of Halesworth is not clear. But if Stebbings threatens to clear out then, provided the Chapter agreed, the Bishop would accept the seven years.
Typed annotation: Addressed to John [Fr Mossey] from Bill [Canon Hunting] Sending the letter onwards (please return) to save writing. Questions lease value and term - £1 p.w for a shop is not a lot.

Writing as one of the Trustees (Fr Flint, Presbytery, High Wycombe mentioned) for the land at Southwold - a site for a Catholic Church. Requests that the custom of not charging for the making up of roads be extended to this site - reasons for doing so:

  1. it is the site of a planned Catholic Church
  2. it will encourage Catholics to visit the town, who might go elsewhere of no Church available
  3. it is a practice extended by other Urban Councils at seaside towns to the Church of England.

Expects the Church to be practically complete by middle of September. Excellent workmanship - sure it will be a very great success. Requests £30 cheque for a new mission at Cobham and has to purchase a [?] for £1500 in which to carry it on - has £950 and the balance is due Saturday 31st and am begging everyone. Have spent £4000 of own money on the museum at Earlsfield, so quite used up and not much Architectural work going on.

Prof. Seward's photographs of lost Church at Dunwich very interesting. Shall frame them and keep them in the presbytery. The last tower buttress removed and re-erected in the churchyard of the Anglican church in Dunwich. One of the stones from the tower was "inserted into my tower here, on the face looking towards Dunwich, to claim (true) 'Continuity'". Book loaned to the Bishop - please return as now out of print.

Need £14-5-0 out of Mission's funds to pay for electric lighting in the new church and presbytery. Altar, awaiting estimates, can be built for when the church is opened and consecrated by the Bishop. Lack of labour hinders work progress. Accepted masses from Fr Demford of Westminster [list not present]. "We have been left in peace here for some time now, but a ship was blown up off here last Saturday."

Encloses the builders account [not present] for extra work outside the contract. Done to save future expense. Contract was only for "fabric" of church and house. Builder is pressing for his money - can Canon Tonks let Fr Mason know what can be done soon.

Is it better to pay the sum in toto as the other side of the plot may be converted to a road and that will cost three times? Perhaps need to erect a temporary place of worship on the site.

Borough surveyors says there is no right of way to the home. Its use seems to be a concession on our part. Perhaps can offer the lady this approach?
Halesworth Church has woodworm on the outside and needs £500 to £550 amount of work. Permission to proceed?
