"The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has backed a campaign to help save a Catholic church roof by signing one of the slates which will form part of the roof repair. St Mary's church in Yarmouth is currently offering an opportunity to 'Sponsor a Slate' as part of essential work to replace concrete tiles on the church roof. When someone sponsors a slate for £10, they can add a message that will be written in white permanent marker pen and placed on the roof." Story continues.

Day of Installation - an infant church - a "Year of Grace"; his homily said it all; groping for the right "shape" of the new diocese; a charge to "lead, to minister, to exercise compassion"; programme of pastoral visits - Archbishop Warlock's lead; responsibilites to the church i England and everywhere but chiefly to the European scene; despite that he will be available; pastoral oversight to be established [organisational aspects listed]; Canon McBride as Vicar-General, Canon Taylor as Chancellor; invites comments on his "model"; will remain at Poringland - chaplain to be appointed for the Cathedral; drafting a second Ad Clerum - to be crisp and to the point.

"A first-ever Cantonese Mass has taken place in Sawston following the arrival of a number of Catholies in the area from Hong Kong. Dominic chung reports. As many as 58 Cantonese-speaking Catholics and their friends, took part in a Mass celebrated by Canon John Minh at our Lady of lourdes Sawston (OLOL), on 7th April. Though he does not speak or read the language, Canon John Minh celebrated entirely in Cantonese, which he learned in record time using phonetics." Story continues.

"SPECIAL PROTECTION has been given to a church in rural Suffolk that until recently was cared for by the Benedictines of Downside Abbey. St Benet's Minster, Beccles, has been listed as Grade II* by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The listing, announced on 19 January by Historic England, means that the church is now protected, and will be eligible for government grants." Story continues

The good Shepherd knows his sheep. The Bishop declares that from 2nd Sunday after Easter ("Bonus Pastor Sunday") he will start a Visitation which will remain open until he declares it closed. "The Bishop will therefore diligently visit the Church, the Presbytery, the Schools, the Cemetery and everything therein contained, and will examine the sacred vessels and furniture, the Altars, tabernacles, and whatever belongs to the worship of God or the administration of the sacraments." Visitation will be announced and confirmations should be arranged for then.

Massive incoming post causes delay. Can debate the central point of the letter: the inadequacy of the New Order Mass compared to the Tridentine Mass. Vatican II debated extensively and profoundly and from there was promulgated the "Constitution of the Sacred Piturgy" in 1963 from which came the April 1969 Apostolic letter of Pope Paul. Fr Baker has known of the1970 Hierarchy directive and has deliberately put his Bishop in an impossible position but is following Canon Law; he could have acted summarily.

Every effort, long hours and many miles involved in finding bridges to attempt to persuade Fr Baker to enjoy the privacy of the Downham Market presbytery. Bishop has for many months been on TV and in print trying to explain what is at stake. "... not just a question of a liturgical rite; it is a refusal to accept the renewed mission of the Church ..."

Expectation that priests and laity obey and respect the Pope and Bishops and celebrate Mass and Sacraments in the Church's way. Warning against attending an unofficial Latin Mass. Establishes that Archbishop Lefebvre and supporters are opposed to Vatican II and are operating outside the orders of the Pope and Bishops. To attend their Mass is to risk parting company with the Pope and the Catholic Church.

Invited to offer the traditional Mass at Newcastle on 8 August. Telling the Bishop through courtesy following his admonition in the Catholic Press. Questions whether his reasoning can be found by the Bishop to be at fault. Offers Fr Wathen's "The Great Sacrilege" as an non-refutable authority. Fr Baker is trying to do God's Will - not defiant to authority but does not agree with the requirement for blind and unquestioning obedience.

The proposed Mass has no ecclesiastical authority - Fr Baker has not sought leave to offer Mass. Despite Fr Baker's defence of following his conscience he has overlooked the duty to educate his conscience - cites a few examples. Bishop says the Fr Baker is neglecting the guidance of Vatican II, the Pope, Bishop Grant and Bishop Clark. Even if you cannot accept these, consider deeply before leaving Downham Market to share your personal difficulties in other dioceses.

Fr Baker celebrated Mass without approval in the old rite without permission, preached without faculties and heard confession in an unsatisfactory conditions. He is reported as saying "Since the Vatican Council there have been two churches, one of which is the modern one with new doctrines, new morality, and new liturgy. They can't excommunicate me for that Church because I have never been a member of it. But I intend to remain loyal to the real Church." He has been on radio and television and has caused us considerable embarrassment. Can you persuade him to remain in Downham Market; he intends to return in the next month?
