475-487: Advent Pastoral letter - A state of the Diocese report - Mrs Lyne Stephens (benefactoress; at her sole cost built churches at Lynford, Shefford, Cambridge, and a donation for Wellingborough church); since 1880 much has been done; 14 new missions started (mentions oratory in Beccles with Benedictines); land for a further 14 missions acquired; encouraging the good work and maintaining funds to underpin the growth.
Asking for the enquiry to be correctly directed. Would like the Diocese to sell him a section of land (garden behind Old School) from that which it recently bought. Outlined in red on a tracing of the area. Purpose: retirement bungalow. Alternatively two plots of the Wells Road used for coach parking.
Bond, ArthurAcknowledge letter from Fr Moorcraft. Will wait for Diocese to contact him should plots become available.
Bond, ArthurSigned and sealed agreement to the clause suggested by Bishop Riddell affecting the holding of land at Bungay.
O'Neill, Peter Augustine Rev OSB (1841-1911)Bishop has not signed the Deed of Conveyance - returned for signature, otherwise cannot proceed.
Bertram R YorkeDisposition of deed, etc. is a matter for Fr Delaney and Canon Tonks to sort out. Fiance is nothing to do with Mr Yorke. Fr Delaney bought the 4 plots and the presbytery in his own name. They were conveyed to the Bishop and others; however, the plots were no longer needed once a new site was found. The same process has happened for this site - acquired by Fr Delaney, subsequently to be conveyed to the Bishop and others. Fr Delaney has deposited the deeds with the bank and paid a deposit because he was concerned not to lose the site. Sort it out between you and send on the deeds for the plots to settle with Mr Reade - it being a small matter but it is hindering things.
Bertram R YorkeReceived the conveyance document. Enclosed deed relates to Fr Delaney selling surplus plots to Mr Reade . They are not needed as a new plot has been bought for the Church. Arrange for the document to be signed by the Bishop and returned.
Bertram R Yorkemuch amended bill of sale for a £200 purchase of land by John Duff of Ramsey for plots 26, 27, 28 on (formerly plots 2, 3, 4) Hartford Road.
CorrespondentExcellent start: rent-free house and gardens; sites for Aldeburgh & Leiston chapels secured. Need to check on conveyance restrictions and re-convey the buildings to Diocesan Trustees (suggested names: Bishop, Fr Delaney, Fr Hugh Parker, Fr Austin O'Sullivan), take your solicitor's advice. Model Trust Deed available. Leiston chapel seems cheap - but need to consider extension in the future, hence make the walls higher to avoid tunnel appearance. For maintenance, use Mission receipts, but in the intervening months Bishop would provide funds through the Poor Mission Fund (Canon Ashmole will send an application form).
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Accepts the offer of the Slipper Chapel and adjacent cottage (includes 1.5 acres adjoining the chapel?). Please write to Rome to confirm this transfer.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Do take advantage of the dispensation - do not take risks with your health. Well done regarding the land; tell Canon Tonks of any other interest.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Suggesting that an individual should go to Oscott or Innsbruck for "deepening". manuscript annotation by Bishop Grant - "I think Oscott - as a convert he still has a lot to learn about the Church in England"). Long explanation about why Bishop Clark circumvented his own processes to spend money on a strip of land which joins up Elmham House to the boundary of the Church and which came up a short notice. He and Fr Connelly paid for it out of income.
All this makes it more desirable to establish a management committee at Walsingham:
himself; Roland [Connelly]; Michael Ward (Solicitor, King's Lynn); Col. Cary-Elwes (Thurton); Philip Browning (Poringland); Mr Jameson (N. Elmham).
Turnover at Walsingham is too large for one man. Expenditure must include an annual repayment to the Diocese to offset the debt.
Writing as Chairman of the Executive Committee, having read the report form Tony Snelling of Dunlop Heywood. The Shrine should operate within its means and not get into a position of indebtedness to the Diocese in the foreseeable future. This proposal would cost at least £300,000m, which would have to be borrowed and paid for. He recalls saying that funds should be built up for maintenance and hopes his position is clear and that he carries the Administrator and the Shrine Executive with him.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop has asked Peter Wilson to deal with the matter of reimbursing £1,000 to Miss Magoris. Suggests that the Parish might contribute more to the St John's fund. Thanks for the picture - "it was a good occasion."
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Just returned form Rome on Friday.
"... I quite approve of the transfer of the site of Bungay Church & Schools, in fact the whole property, to trustees appointed by the President General of the Benedictines, the Rt Rev P O'Neill. But I think that a clause shld be inserted to this effect 'if at any time the English Benedictines decide to give up serving the mission then the trustees shall transfer the whole property to trustees appointed by the Roman Catholic Bishop having spiritual jurisdiction or presiding over the Roman Catholics of Bungay'".
[postscript:] "I hope your Grace has got over the difficulty at Norwich: the non-completion of the church is costing me £120 a year."
Acknowledges Fr Shannon's letter re Hemsby and sale of land. Chris Toller [Witham?] will make arrangements for the sale.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Unless there has been a change in intended use for the building then the previous planning permission will stand. If there is a widening of uses then planning permission needs to be applied for.
Borough of King's LynnRef Car Parking at RC Church in Sawston. Fr O'Toole's offer of land in exchange for access points to highway for church car parking agreed. Clerk of CC will be in touch to make arrangements.
Cambridgeshire & Isle of Ely County CouncilCanon Burditt (Diocesan Officer for Areas of Expansion) reports in a visit made to King's Lynn at Fr Hammond's invitation. The purpose was to advise on which of two plots being offered by the Council for a new Catholic Church. Describes local demographics for the town and for Catholics. The two site being Marsh Lane and Reffley. On balance the two sites are about equal; Fr Hammond has a preference for Reffley. So, Canon Burditt recommends that the Reffley site be considered for development as a Catholic Church and presbytery.
