Part of Our Lady and St Peter Parish, Aldeburgh

Cannot form an estimate of income from the visitors during the season, therefore will ask Canon Ashmole for an application form for the Poor Mission fund soon. Costs of furnishing, repairing and decorating the presbytery were high; the nuns only advanced half his last quarter salary; getting the workmen our the house (fourteen of them) was an issue. No problem with putting the chapel on the garden in fact he might be able to get an additional strip of land as a gift. After his return from Paris, Fr Delaney hopes to do great things with building fund and maintenance fund. Would like to get building soon since it is difficult to accommodate the existing congregation without including visitors. Numbers are increasing 3 recantations in both Aldeburgh and Leiston; four ready for full baptism; three babies for baptism.

Mr Young, very entertaining and interested in the project, he has taken measurements and will draw up plans and scheme. Says that £1,000 will not get a lot but he will do his best for Fr Delaney. Mr Dermott may make over a plot of land adjacent to the presbytery - the site would then be 100 ft frontage on Fawcett Road with a depth of 64ft. Reminded the Bishop about petrol and states that he has sold his old motorcycle and bought a new one for £55 , this year's model.

Thanks the Bishop for authorising his appeals; explains costs associated with appeals can outweigh income from them. £100 only in Church Fund. Beautiful site (paid for by the Benefactress, who built Lowestoft Church); 60 in congregation (from 12/15 at start); decent chapel in town with a fair rent - need a priest's house more than a church. The wooden chapel from Birmingham suggested by the Bishop would be too small to accommodate 150-200 in Summer.

Part of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Parish, Wymondham

Writing from (St Etheldreda) Egremont Street in Ely, Fr Stokes discusses that Wymondham, a pretty town, is not growing only a brush making factory with a potential basket making business. The first house is being sold because the owner's business has gone. The nearness to Norwich (9 and half miles) makes its development unlikely/slow. Canon Stokes is keen to have a permanent priest in the town (current chapel is £35 per annum with priest's costs being £50 ) as serving it from Norwich is burdensome. The existing chapel is seems purpose built as a country Catholic Chapel and is in Mr Glasspool's garden - if that house can be bought then it would be ideal. Having a priest on site is likely to bring benefits as he could then bring local knowledge to bear on any potential purchases.

Writing from (St Etheldreda) Egremont Street in Ely, Fr Stokes informs the Bishop that he met with Canon Fitzgerald about a house. He considers there to be too much wrong with it. However, a "Nurses Home" nearby, possibly undervalued at £800, offers a better opportunity. Although he suggests that Catholic clergy should not contact the vendor since they are likely to take it off the market if they though it might become a Catholic Mission.
