Points briefly, but not intended to be brusque.

8. "I am not letting you down..."

An unusually presented document - red and black ink typing; Greek or Romanian language annotations; several corrections using: correction fluid, manuscript amendments; small pieces of paper with the correction typed on it and stuck into place on the sheet. The heading is glued to the first sheet and is printed: "The Romanian Orthodox Church in London / St Dunstan's-in-the-West / Fleet Street EC4.
The letter is headed private, personal and confidential "(unless for Cardinal Hume afterwards)" and ends with a postscript: "P.S. Although confidential this may be later passed to any other competent authority, diocesan, parochial etc."
The author and his wife [Marina?] were in Walsingham and observed pilgrims being marshalled around the Slipper Chapel at Houghton [St Giles] with the aim of ensuring they do not go to Walsingham to see the other Shrine, Holy House or Well. The author's concern is that the Pope will be treated in the same manner and not come to know the entirety of Walsingham. He references a report he wrote in 1978 and which was published in 1980 for which he was rebuked by the Anglican Rev Mother Julian and the Orthodox Chaplain Fr Hieromonk David because it did not reflect the current reality of the relations between the Roman Latin and Orthodox. Rev James appeals to Bishop Butler to rout the "houghtonite" schism. He warns not to slight BVM (the Blessed Virgin Mary) mentioning 24 October 1612, the Russian "Troublous" Times and 1656 the intervention in Poland.

The Meryemana appeal for an ecumenical centre and restoration of a shrine is a project which Dr Heley considers would benefit form the patronage of Cardinal Hume.
