Michael Kelleher, Witham, Weld & Co writing to inform the Canon that they have been instructed by the Bishop in relation to the purchase of the Church site in Caister. Contract enclosed, for signing and return, for the price of £500. Fr Dennis has agreed the terms and provided the deposit of £55.
Witham, Weld and CoLetter discusses the nature of funding and tax liabilities. When did Miss Insley die? [manuscript note: "10.2.84"]. Possible to arrange for a charitable trust to hold the funds - Witham Weld cannot advise the trustees on what to do, they need to be advised by their own advisors. The two gifts have particular problems and will need to be administered separately.
Witham, Weld and CoPlanning permission for the erection of a church and presbytery with conditions. Assume no objection to these and will complete on receipt of funds from Canon Hunting.
Witham, Weld and CoReprises the planning application process when they were under heavy pressure toprovide adequate parking facilities, this was done, but there are complaints. Need to consider a reply to the Borough Council.
Wingate, Michael AADipl RIBAHas not yet been able to contact the key man about the heating troubles.
The ingress of water into the Narthex seemed to be entering below the windows. Wagg Jex sent men over. They say that the gales had lifted the lead flashing along the abutment. This has been re-dressed and should be fine now. Need to ensure that in future someone has a look around after similar gales.
Further to the letter from the Borough Council. The situation is not as anticipated when the design/planning was done for the church. He explains what these are but also adds that buying extra land for additional parking is not an option as the church does not wish the parish to take on extra debt. Fr Shryane has advised the congregation about considerate parking when attending church.
Wingate, Michael AADipl RIBAWilliam Lunn has inspected St Mary's with Fr Wrigglesworth - it is in a dangerous state and has settled further since last inspected. Asks the Bishop to allow him to assist in work thought necessary "for I have been accustomed to building in the Fens for sixteen years". Bishop of Portsmouth has also written.
W Lunn, Architect & SurveyorPlanning application permission. Condition - sufficient car parking space to be provided.
West Norfolk District Council (1974-)Records of soil composition and depth from 2 boreholes by WES around the church
Correspondent"Around 40 Catholic churches across the Diocese of east Anglia have re-opened their doors for private prayer in a move welcomed by Bishop Alan Hopes." Story continues.

Advises on the work required to be done to restore the plaster-work inside the tower - asks that an estimate be provided to Fr Bull. Noted that the whole of the plaster is away from the inside of the tower, probably due to moister present prior to the restoration work done 3 years ago. Need to install tell-tales to monitor movement/cracking.
Wearing & HastingsInforming the builder that the Church in Aldeburgh had been inspected by them. Two items for attention: sliding doors adjustment; cleaning off of mastic stains on floor blocks. Have written to both the new priest and Fr Jolly.
Wearing & HastingsRegarding the alterations and extensions recently carried out at the church in Aldeburgh: inspection for faults as end of six-month maintenance period. Invite new priest to do the same. Have also written to Fr Jolly with enclosed copy of letter to builder.
Wearing & HastingsDrawings enclosed for new design as approved by the Bishop. Planning authority comments necessitated a complete re-design also approved by the Bishop. Will now seat 200 people; have approached Dawnays re steelwork & substructure; raft structure deemed best but if you have different view get in touch soon.
Wearing & HastingsNot spoken about stone before. Normally not keen on using reconstituted stone for the Church. Their experience is that it weathers poorly. Rather avoid it.
Wearing & HastingsBishop approves tall window; now accommodated 200 people; cost within £6,000. Planning authority's adverse comments on previous design necessitated a complete re-design. Bishop has seen these and approved. Laying of Foundation Stone: September 21st or 22nd. The inscription can be in English or Latin - please let us know what you want as soon as you can.
Wearing & HastingsStructural state of tower [summary]:
- considerable cracks in lower tower, settlement a probable cause, other cracks in church building due to same;
- Cracks in upper tower, affecting roof area locally, indicating settlement and tower tipping;
- Flintwork cracking, coming away, loss of adhesion allows water into structure behind, possibly leading to further damage;
- waterspout too short, leading to added dampness and aggravate settlement under way
- Parapet in a bad way, stones loose, iron band may be making matters worse.
No imminent danger of collapse but the tower is "on the move" and deterioration will continue. Not recommend making good - lists significant work required - possible cost £1000. Best option to bring the tower down and continue the roof over the top of it.
Copy of the report sent to the Bishop.
