Part of St Benet's Minster Parish, Beccles

E Myers, President, St Edmund's College, Ware: Mr Banham and his son Cyril spend the weekend at the College. Needs to revise much of his Latin. Has been at home for 5 years and is clearly very delicate but with care should be able to get along. Subject to the doctor's opinion, suggested he come in a month's time. Enclosure - refers to the father's letter which explains the situation but requested its return, hence not present.

Part of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Parish, Wymondham

Writing from (St Etheldreda) Egremont Street in Ely, Fr Stokes discusses that Wymondham, a pretty town, is not growing only a brush making factory with a potential basket making business. The first house is being sold because the owner's business has gone. The nearness to Norwich (9 and half miles) makes its development unlikely/slow. Canon Stokes is keen to have a permanent priest in the town (current chapel is £35 per annum with priest's costs being £50 ) as serving it from Norwich is burdensome. The existing chapel is seems purpose built as a country Catholic Chapel and is in Mr Glasspool's garden - if that house can be bought then it would be ideal. Having a priest on site is likely to bring benefits as he could then bring local knowledge to bear on any potential purchases.

Writing from (St Etheldreda) Egremont Street in Ely, Fr Stokes informs the Bishop that he met with Canon Fitzgerald about a house. He considers there to be too much wrong with it. However, a "Nurses Home" nearby, possibly undervalued at £800, offers a better opportunity. Although he suggests that Catholic clergy should not contact the vendor since they are likely to take it off the market if they though it might become a Catholic Mission.

Part of Our Lady and St Peter Parish, Aldeburgh

Letter signed by: Chas A Christmas, R Macdonald, W P McLoughlin, J M W Smith, K Smith. (Address "Glandore", 41 Carr Avenue, Leiston)
Representing the Leiston Catholic Congregation. 5,000 population with about 30 attending services.; could be more if a Church was present; more so as 200 houses are to built. Appealing to the Bishop to support the building of a church in Leiston. Fr Delaney has told them that the Bishop has offered to donate substantially to the Church Building Fund. Believe they can offer £108 towards costs. Accommodation in a tiny room in a private house being used now is too crowded. Plot of land bought for £70; wooden structure proposed for about £200. A hut (20ft x 68ft) is available for £90; fund available about £35; aware of another hut (120ft x 20ft) for £180 excluding transport and re-erection. Both huts will be sold soon if no action taken.

Part of The Sacred Heart Parish, St Ives

Parishioner's son to be received by Fr Marshall having to attend Mass at St Ives where irregular Masses, etc. have been a problem, worried about effect of "irreverence slackness" on son. Provides a number of examples of the slackness: Congregation upset at the behaviour of the housekeeper and the harmonium playing which is excused by her as it "livens up the service a bit". Asking for another Priest to be sent for a week.

Pleased to give £1000 for the new church i Aldeburgh - also offers altar and statue when it is built. It was a treat to have a few words with the Bishop. Sorry about Sr Joseph who was always kind to him. A sister asked to put her in the Johnson Fund and he did not have the heart to refuse - but thinks it is a waste of money. Visiting the grave at St Joseph's this week and will say a prayer for him [?] for the Bishop. "I think you have given me rather a large order."
[a p.s.] "I shall have to do something for St Joseph when I have paid my debts"

Forgot to mention the proposed sanctuary to The Sacred Heart. Money will be paid when needed. Went to St Joseph's but could not find the Bishop's brother's grave. Fr Boscali asks, when Bishop is in Birmingham, if he could see the Lourdes Chapel and the proposed grotto in the gas meter place. Jackson thinks this grotto is an unnecessary expense. The window to Our Lady of Lourdes will be there to be seen.

Sends a little Christmas present. He might visit in the New Year provided no snow - the accident makes him fearful. An investment of £700-5-0 at 6.5% not refused. The St Chad's plans for the grotto [?] have an enormous cost: £900 -5-0. The chapel will cost over £200. He told Fr Boscali that he could not afford that as all his money is tied up. The £1000 is untouched and reserved for the Church.
