Statement on Freemasonry
GB ARCHON 2913 EABC-00-01-29 · Item · 21 November 1974
Part of East Anglia Bishops' Correspondence

Canon Law 2335 no longer automatically bars a Catholic from masonic groups unless that group is known to be hostile to the Church, in which case the Catholic is excommunicated. Bishops of England and Wales clarify a Catholics' standing with Freemasonry membership, anticipating changes to Canon Law. The catholic wishing to join a masonic group should contact his Bishop.
Priest, religious and members of Secular institutions are still forbidden to accept membership of the Masonic Order or similar organisation.

Roger Reader (Provincial Secretary) writing to "Dear Father". Their synod attended by 30 members (most from Westminster, East Anglia and Birmingham) met on 12 March 1997 at Newman House. They desire that the Society is of real use to the priesthood of the Catholic Church. Enclose their Statutes and ask how to progress them to authorisation.

Fr Roger Reader (Provincial Secretary) Important to begin a process to achieve formal approval of their Statutes in line with Canon Law 298-326 for the Roman Province of their Society. Good to have a formal relationship with the Hierarchy especially in the light of Dr Oddie's recent unfortunate book. Suggest that Fr David Paul (pp at S. Laurence in Cambridge), our Master, might approach Bishop Peter Smith. Need to promote priestly fraternity.

pg 1: 4 questions in French
pg 2: translation of the 4 questions:

  1. Six years ago, on 25 March 1976, you said of the relationship between the Catholic and Anglican Churches that "our sister Churches can now regard the past as dead and buried." Today, after all the work accomplished by the Join Anglican-Catholic Commission, what moves are possible which would permit a step forward to be taken?
  2. What are the principle obstacles at the moment to a decisive step towards the unity of the two churches?
  3. You have taken part in meetings of the British Council of Churches. What is the present nature of the Catholic Church's participation? Is there a prospect of full membership in the relatively near future?
  4. What do you expect in general from the Holy Father's visit, and in particular, in the field of ecumenism?
