Inviting "Your Eminence" [Cardinal Hume] to King's Lynn to celebrate the leasing of the Red Chapel to Bishop of Northampton [Grant]. to be the first Cardinal to set foot inside the chapel. Some history about the chapel. Service not finalised; request suggestions for ecumenical dignatories to be invited.
Wace, Harry Montague Anthony Rev (1926-2002)Thanks for the advice not to move with regard to the LMS [Latin Mass Society]. Have received another letter - not brash, kind - but still not inclined for a change of mind. Send any information which would influence the decision.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)An announcement of the departure of Bishop Butler from the role of Area Bishop for Hertfordshire; his successor is Mgr James O'Brien; arrangements, etc.
Hume, George Basil Rev (1923-1999)Suggesting a wise priest, and Chancellor of the Diocese, Canon Paul Taylor. He has seen the letter.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Cathedral project phases 1-4; Cost £350,000 (equals 100 medium priced cars!); Appeal; Blackfriars Hall in Norwich on 3rd February 1978, Cardinal Hume and other patrons attending; requesting names and addresses of potential donors; hospital for cyst removal on 12 February
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)He and Coelfrid enjoyed the meal and meeting Basil Hume.Mentions the Bishop's forthcoming operation; hopes the appeal will get a response in Beccles but spending nearly £6,000 on our own roof may work against it.
Watkin, Aelred Rev MA FSA FRSA FRHistS (1918-1997)Acknowledges receipt of the "aide mémoire" - clear and outlined the problem perfectly. Accepted the Cardinal's point to Canterbury regarding the differences between ourselves on the approach to Anglican Orders. Reconciliation of the respective churches first, then easy to make good any defect in present Anglican Orders.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)12 glossy colour images of Pope John Paul, Cardinal Hume, Bishop Smith and others - meeting.
6 images scanned and presented in AtoM under this record
6 other photographs cover a meeting between Pope John Paul II and Bishop Smith with two other clergy (all these copyright "Foto FELICI")
Cardinal Hume with crozier (following Bishop Clark to left - his crozier just visible )
UnknownHas just received a reply from Cardinal Knox to his letter dated 9 October 1979.
Discouraging - appreciate the Cardinal Hume's counsel. The inability to give General Absolution at time of pilgrimage is not a disaster - but the letter shows an addiction to strict and literal interpretation of the norms.
He has instructed his clergy that in real necessity they are authorised to administer GA (the kind of necessity the Congregation does not admit!) and inform him after the fact. But this has been rarely used and with no criticisms
Bishop Clark thinks that something has "leaked".
Decision to call a halt is sad and harsh, but, a projected cost of £1.3 million would require the full support of the Bishops in the Catholic community. Hope that the work done is not seen as in vain. Have asked the architect Mr Wingate to consult with Fr Birch on making fit the "Outside Altar" for say £300,000. Despite all this, the Cardinal begged that we must retain "what he loves at Walsingham: its simplicity".
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop Charles and Bishop Derek have offered support for "THE PROJECT". Cardinal Basil thinks there will be no difficulty in raising £150,000. Appeal being run by Fr Birch; financial responsibility to be the Diocese'. Helpful for Fr John Drury to help Fr Wilson? There is no treasurer worthy of the name. Charitable trust set up by Michael Ward. Bishop leaving it to Fr Wilson to address the how, when and what.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Lt Col Philp provided £1,000 to the Development Fund in memory of the Bishop being appointed Prior of the eastern Section of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

An unusually presented document - red and black ink typing; Greek or Romanian language annotations; several corrections using: correction fluid, manuscript amendments; small pieces of paper with the correction typed on it and stuck into place on the sheet. The heading is glued to the first sheet and is printed: "The Romanian Orthodox Church in London / St Dunstan's-in-the-West / Fleet Street EC4.
The letter is headed private, personal and confidential "(unless for Cardinal Hume afterwards)" and ends with a postscript: "P.S. Although confidential this may be later passed to any other competent authority, diocesan, parochial etc."
The author and his wife [Marina?] were in Walsingham and observed pilgrims being marshalled around the Slipper Chapel at Houghton [St Giles] with the aim of ensuring they do not go to Walsingham to see the other Shrine, Holy House or Well. The author's concern is that the Pope will be treated in the same manner and not come to know the entirety of Walsingham. He references a report he wrote in 1978 and which was published in 1980 for which he was rebuked by the Anglican Rev Mother Julian and the Orthodox Chaplain Fr Hieromonk David because it did not reflect the current reality of the relations between the Roman Latin and Orthodox. Rev James appeals to Bishop Butler to rout the "houghtonite" schism. He warns not to slight BVM (the Blessed Virgin Mary) mentioning 24 October 1612, the Russian "Troublous" Times and 1656 the intervention in Poland.
Before the Bishop goes to Rome, two questions:
- Asking for written approval (for the archives) to confirm a verbal authority to hold the ceremony for the Anointing of the Sick during pilgrimage masses
- Bishop of East Anglia has authority from the Conference of Bishops to make an appeal - has anything been done?
manuscript p.s.: "P.S. My replies from the Cardinal made no reference to the Press Conference..."
Points briefly, but not intended to be brusque.
- irresponsible to promote this distasteful campaign to induce a visit
- No decisions taken; matter surely on the agenda of the November Hierarchy Meeting; to involve Carding and Archbishop Worlock
- finances do not work out - the Irish still paying off a large debt [for the Papal visit to Knock]
- issues over meeting the Archbishop of Canterbury at Walsingham
- disparaging remarks about "taking out Lady to the Pope" do not deter Bishop Clark - she is more important than her shrine
- Fr Birch exaggerates. Canterbury visit (probably) of far greater significance
- Once the Hierarchy decided on priorities, Bishop will be clear and uncompromising - no blame nor chiding - his idea can be sold to the nation and a community which wants to glimpse the Pope
- "I am not letting you down..."
Briefing (Vol 10 No 42) Page 1 and 2: Headline: "Appeal launched for National Shrine" - Support from Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Hume, The Bishop's Conference, Duke of Norfolk. Bishop Clark and Fr Birch provide background.
