Aldeburgh Church: Have written to Fr Jolly about the options for the Tower. Note that the original architect for the tower was said by Fr Jolly not to be in business, but this is not the case. Hence there is a problem of professional etiquette and they are happy to write to Mr Reid if required to do so.
Witton Church: Noted comments on design; preliminary sketches for Board meeting on 30th [November 1954].
Confirms that the tender includes pulling the tower down and roofing it over. The architect will be interviewing Reade about extras. Bill intends the Leiston money to be borrowed. Anxious to complete the job before bad weather. Bill & Christine [?] in Scotland and writer will report on Bill taking up duties. Fr Lunley is very sick man - wherever he goes he will need someone liken Mrs Hebb (Bill's housekeeper) as his memory is quite unreliable. As for chapel here [Holy Family and St Michael's, Kesgrave ?] cannot use it its unfinished state but expects it to be in order by September 24 - parishioners best able to come on that date. You will approve of addition in appearance.
Jolly, W O MrFr Reeman has seen the tenant in Top House, Mr Argent, about the price of £6000. He is interested but also has an interest in another house in Aldeburgh at an auction. Mr Argent wants to discuss this with the Bishop when he visits Aldeburgh.
Fr Reeman is willing to act as Extraordinary Confessor t the Lowestoft sisters.
Pleased to hear from Canon Thomson that agreement has been reached for the garages. Mr Green, a local Contractor, will construct them. Please provide the deeds to support the lease and plans

Disagrees with the Bishop. Considers the trust funds could be better managed and not allowed to deteriorate in returns - draws a comparison with Downside's better fund management. Quotes Canon Hunting that too much effort is required to maintain too little income.
Innes, M Benet Rev OSBNo reply from Headmaster at Leman school regarding provisions for RI for RC children. Architects Sterret & Blouet of Ashley Place SW1 instructed but only produced two sketches, still awaiting their brain child. Ministry will allow for one classroom but want two. Build it myself if necessary. Saw the Bishop in Southwold and in his customary manner he assumed I had not asked you for advice, I was too bored to enlighten him.
Innes, M Benet Rev OSBwriting from 89 Elizabeth Street SW1: Discussion on the need to align various bishops around a set of initiatives on the General School Front which is reaching a turning point. Need to ensure Bp Parker is on board. Mentions Under Secretary for Schools, Sir Percival Waterfield (retired, HM Treasury), Sylvia Goodfellow, Bishop of Salford.
Men are now in the priest's house at Beccles turning it into the new school - be in before Winter.
Bishop has asked him to respond. Request information about the children for when he approaches Mr Missen, the Chief Education Officer.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Understands the difficulties presented by the removal of seniors from the school. Not desirable to have Protestant children in the school. However, careful thought must be given to the school's circumstances. Decisions made will have an impact on Gorleston school and perhaps any Catholic Grammar for East Anglia. It is for the decision of the bishop.
The nature of children lapsing from the Faith is complex and much work is being done on addressing it. The Catholic Catechetical Centre being set up will provide benefit in this area.
Roof repairs complete -stone work repaired and chimney stacks repainted. Mission debt is £1100 and House debt £800. Hopefully both significantly reduced by the end of the year.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Fr Jolly is finding it increasingly impossible to continue at Aldeburgh because of his health. Besides diabetes, his nervous "black-outs" need to be diagnosed by a nerve specialist who is currently away. He asks the bishop for an absence of 3 months to get a diagnosis and rest; also, asks the Bishop to arrange short term cover for the parish. He is extremely happy at Aldeburgh and wishes to return to to stay, but, the Bishop may think that the cover should be a permanent arrangement.

Bishop advises that deeds for presbytery (Normanhurst plots 34 & 35?) are with Withams. As is the separate deed for church plot. Good idea to have a church hall, but, all costs, etc. must go through Finance Board, which meets on 26 February. Bishop is at the Convent in Ipswich and could deal with the matter himself if it is urgent. Does Fr Jolly know anything about Mrs Spencer of Thoringham, Saxmundham? May have lunch there and might meet Fr Jolly there too.
Bishop's OfficeNeighbour (a parishioner) is selling a house, building a bungalow in the garden. The buyer wants a garage at the rear as access to common is not permitted. Offer is to sell the land where our current garage is to the parishioner; he will build us a new garage. Map of site attached.
Manuscript annotation: "I write to Witham. Write Rudd, also Bill [Canon Hunting] for proposed new road now dropped, OK. What sort of garage & fence, Pay Job fees."
A neighbour is interested in purchasing a strip of land alongside the church to avoid having to drive across the Common and cutting it up. Fr Rudd told him he'd have to ask the Bishop
Rudd, Francis J Rev (-1973)Review undertaken at the Bishop's request of the suitability for purchase of 3 houses in Halesworth.
