Invited to offer the traditional Mass at Newcastle on 8 August. Telling the Bishop through courtesy following his admonition in the Catholic Press. Questions whether his reasoning can be found by the Bishop to be at fault. Offers Fr Wathen's "The Great Sacrilege" as an non-refutable authority. Fr Baker is trying to do God's Will - not defiant to authority but does not agree with the requirement for blind and unquestioning obedience.

Amherst, Francis Kerril Rev (1819-1883)Bishops rarely write about themselves in their Pastoral Letters - more about how we stand with God; believing in the Good News; Lent is a time for loving; prepare for the Pope's visit; savage reactions in the Catholic Press; what is there to fear?; "The pilgrimage is hard going at times but the company is wonderful"

Pope Pius IX has returned to Rome after his exile - every church shoudl sing the "Te Deum" and change the prayers.
addressed to "The Very Reverend / F C Husenbeth / Cossey / Norwich"
Holy Father has approved a petition from Third Provincial Council of Westminster. Masses for deceased brethren must abide by new rules. A Register for Masses must be maintained in each Diocese. Canon Oleron will receive and enrol names who wish to be entered into the Register for Masses. Responsibility of each priest to be recorded in the correct register (if they move between dioceses) and if so recorded to say one mass each year for those names in the Register.
Holy Father has allowed the use of Dripping and Lard on all days except for Good Friday [previously proscribed at times in Lent].
Discontinuation of prayers for the harvest; the Te Deum to be sung by way of thanksgiving.
Returned from Rome; John Paul II blessing; conclave election; implementing Vatican II
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)introduction by Bp Clark; Pastoral Letter: Holy Father comes in 6 months; plands bein gconsidered in Rome; Security costs money; no figures but bills to be paid; collection on 3rd January; Wembley Mass May 29th and Youth Event in Cardiff on 2nd June.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Fr Baker has decided to challenge the current arrangements. He has opened a Tridentine mass centre in Bethel Street in Norwic, not far from the Cathedral. Appends an extract of the digest created by the Archbishop of Birmingham of the pope's speech regarding Archbishop Lefebvre and those who support him. The position needs to be made crystal clear. The priests are to read out the instruction - Fr Baker is deliberately flouting the authority of the Church, the Holy Father and his bishops; such people are putting themselves out of communion with the same; the pope draws his authority from Christ and hence requires obedience; no priest is to celebrate the Tridentine rite with a congregation, and, no one can join him without express permission.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Writing to say that he has been directed to request clergy to pray for the soul of the Pope [Leo XII] and to continue doing so until a new Pope is elected to the chair of St Peter.
