Correspondence on a wide range of subjects between the Bishops of East Anglia and other bodies / organisations
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Correspondence between East Anglia Bishops Clark & Smith with Westminster Province / Archbishop / Archbishop's Office.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Covering letter for a note on the proposal for handling mixed marriages. A stumbling block. May not stay on the International Commission [ARCIC?] is the Cardinal's proposals go through.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Discussion document on the proposed Roman document on Mixed Marriages. Whereas such a marriage is stated as being "illicit"; this implies that they are "valid". The requirement to not place impediments in the way of the Catholic partner, may be seen as unreasonable since the non-Catholic partner's head of church makes no such request. All that has to be done is to attend confession, after the marriage in a non-catholic church, and then can access the sacraments like any other.
Has an ecumenical impact for [Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC)].
If one substitutes for "relationship" the word "communion" - then could have said: every Christian is in a real (though sometimes imperfect) communion with the Roman Catholic Church. One could say same thing not only about individual separated brethren but about their "churches or ecclesial communities". cf "The Theology of Vatican II' pp 124-134.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Vicar General, Mgr Ralph Brown, writing to Westminster priests [copied to Diocesan Bishops] warning of an individual who operates under the title The Ecumenical Lay Community of Labretines. This and its associates (The Labretine Oblates of St Benedict; St Benedict's Homeless Community Trust; The Labretine Homeless Trust Fund Ltd) does no have permission to claim the support of the Catholic Church nor the protection of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Archbishop's OfficeVicar General, Mgr Ralph Brown, writing [to the instigator?] that St Benedict's Homeless Community Trust does not have the support of the Catholic Church nor the protection of the Archdiocese of Westminster. Therefore such references must be deleted from promotional material
Archbishop's OfficeWishes that they go out as a Province for the 1992 Ad Limina visit to Rome - suggests dates
Hume, George Basil Rev (1923-1999)Acknowledges the 1992 Ad Limina letter. Mentions an event "yesterday". Been ill for 3 weeks.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Dates for Ad Limina will mean going without Bishop Clark. Hopes that he is recovering as he is stalked by ill health for too long. St Alban's was a great day. Everyone friendly and happy to see they opened their doors to so many local Catholics.
Hume, George Basil Rev (1923-1999)Cannot duck the new Joint Working Group's first plenary [re dates for Ad Limina].
Assures the Cardinal he has been consistently fit until the virus came along - spent a week in "Hope House" in Cambridge and apart from catarrh is back on form.
The Joint Working Group WCC/RCC plenary in Rome will have been concluded in time for the Ad Limina on 16 March.
A week just spent in West country and then going for a 2 week cruise round Britain.
Press release containing the statements made by Basil Hume & Archbishop Worlock in response to comments made by Dr George Carey [Archbishop of Canterbury] about the Catholic Church's teaching on birth control and environmental issues.
Archbishop's OfficeRound robin to Bishops of England and Wales: grateful for another special collection for "Crisis in Africa". Explains what he saw when visiting Zimbabwe, Mozambique. Dire but not quite at the same level as Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1990 - but 11th hour. CAFOD's work across Southern and Eastern Africa supported by the money raised following the [Bishops'] Conference decision.
Archbishop's OfficeConfidential: Theological issue relating to partial communion with Catholic Church. Matter to be put to two Australian theologians.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Confidential: Marist Provincial confirmed that within the Constitution of the Congregation Marist priests cannot become Bishops - exceptionally a missionary diocese may be allowed.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Gordon Wheeler's reply on the Common Bible: hope he makes the proposal as from the Liturgical Commission. Cardinal seemed favourable to it.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Meeting of Presidents of Bishops' Conferences in Europe; Pope called for a special day of prayer for peace in Europe, in particular the Balkans. Cardinal Hume is recommending to the Bishops the 1st January for this.
Hume, George Basil Rev (1923-1999)Personal: thanking the Cardinal for presiding over the debate. Concerned about the ability of colleagues to rise to the occasion and avoid the charge of "Fortress Catholicism", otherwise "we'll dwindle (yes, we)". Perhaps Bishop Clark's remarks were a spill over form the days of ARCIC in the 70s; but, need to those with imagination and initiative to pursue the aims and objectives of ARCIC and unity as a whole.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Letter to John Patten, Secretary of State for Education. Raises concerns about aspects of the Education Bill, funding, intervention, etc.
Final Paragraph: "In this letter I have sought to place specific anxieties I have about some provisions in the current Education Bill in the broader context of the future of Catholic schools. The Anglican Church has similar misgivings about this legislation, and of course shares a similar vision of the Churches' mission in our society to witness to enduring human values. ... I am not seeking a protected or privileged place for Catholic schools. ... expected to meet same standards of educational attainment and efficiency as other schools."
