Part of The Sacred Heart Parish, St Ives

Thanking Bishop for dealing with Padre Pio matter. Lucian, Romanian seminarian at Oscott, wants to take a 1 year M Phil at Birmingham University. Not being an "EC" student, the course fees are £6000 and the college will only pay £2000. Lucian's efforts to gain additional funding have not worked. Fr Kerby, considering St Ives is well off, asks if they could pay £2000 to assist? This degree would help Lucian in Romania as he'd be qualified to teach.

Fr Kerby is looking forward to meeting James Fyfe. He has written to the South American couple explaining the situation and to say they are welcome to use the front room in the Presbytery, if they wish to have somewhere to stay. Lucian ?, the Romanian is back in Romania and is waiting for his M Phil results from Birmingham University. He is still not ordained, his bishop is taking exception to him getting married, despite being of the Eastern rite.

Part of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Parish, Wymondham

Fr Jennings informing the Bishop that RAF Watton is to close and consequently there will not be a chapel for the community there. In considering Mass provision it may require a general review of Masses at Wymondham. Who is responsible for the Ministry of Formation of Priests since the position has been vacant for 3 years?

Fr Brown suggests a "Resignation Honours List" after his 14 years in the parish. to recognise he very hard work some parishioners have done over the years. He will do his own Certificate of Commendation but names 4 (with rationale) that he would like to receive a Diocesan Medal: Mrs Mary Fairman, Mrs Anita Dowsing, Mrs Veronica Pell, Mrs Jennifer Lysons. He encloses £100 to cover the cost and would like to issue them on 1st June.

Programme for Bishop Peter Smith to visit Wymondham on 23rd & 24th May 1998. Includes going to Hethersett, RAF Watton, a buffet and auction of promises with inaugural third world parish link.
Also a page of briefing notes related to points raised by Parish Pastoral Council: 1. Vision for the future - to help parish in how it sees itself; 2. Buffet supper with non RC clergy invited to help develop ecumenical links in the area; 3. RAF closing Officers' Mess at Watton, where the Catholic Chapel is housed - Bishop's presence is a statement about the importance of RAF's continued support; CO may be present.

FR Brown is aware that Fr Bernard Jones is leaving Quidenham. He asks the Bishop to consider Wymondham and him when making a new appointment. The Quidenham/Attleborough area is supported by Fr Jones and Fr Brown would appreciate the appointment of a "not too 'unusual'" priest who could continue the support his burdens in his declining years.

Part of St Mary's Parish, Great Yarmouth

Writing to ask the Bishop that they meet to discuss the "strong rumour" that Mass at Hemsby will end after the next two weeks. Mentions his wife (Bridget who is on the Ecumenical Committee) and his sister (Sister Pia Buxton, IBVM, [1932-2010]). He and his family have been involved in Ecumenism and Roman Catholicism for many years; indeed his mother was largely instrumental in helping to build and found the small RC chapel-Mass Centre in Hemsby just after the war. Understands that the Augustinians are leaving, which is sad but no doubt there are good reasons. The congregation in Hemsby visit St Mary's in Yarmouth infrequently and he says they deserve better treatment.

Fr Shannon details new arrangements, since there are only two priests now, for timetabling Masses in St Mary's Parish, affecting Hemsby, Caister, Acle, Yarmouth. Thanks the Bishop for his induction at St Mary's last week. Will be talking to the Vicar at Hemsby and the Methodist minister at Acle regarding use of their buildings for Masses.

Speaking with Philip Shryane last week, they felt there is a need for in-service training for Diocesan deacons to improve communication/preaching skills. Also suggests that more time be made available for chaplains at Notre Dame School and the Norfolk and Norwich hospital - there is need to accommodate the demands of both institutions. He and "Sean" are settling in well at Yarmouth. Sean will make a fine priest, is a good companion and has done well in his Rome exam.

Fr Shannon and the Dean, Fr Tony Sketch, visited St Teresa's Social Centre in Acle and St Thomas More's Chapel in Hemsby. The former should be kept to support the growing community in Acle and district. The latter is occasionally used for Mass on Holydays of Obligation. The Anglican Church is rented for Saturday evening Mass at £1100 per annum. Two options: 1. buy a bungalow for a retired priest to live in; renovate and renew chapel at some cost; cease rental of Anglican church. 2. Sell the land. Use Caister instead.
Hemsby folk may be aggravated since they did raise money to extend the chapel some years ago. With a congregation of 50-60 in the Winter rising to 100 in the Summer with holiday makers - Fr Shannon is sure they could all get to Caister (3 miles distant).

Update on Fr Josaphat. Having spoken to Fr Shannon in Yarmouth, he took him on for a trial period of two years. He is very pleased with his presence in the parish, he is eager to work, very jolly and kind to the parishioners. It is good for Nigerians to have one of their own priests, As the trial is coming to an end he is disposed to allowing him to see out his remaining two years of his visa in this parish.
