Despite a priest being zealous nothing can help support the growing congregation at Southwold better than an established priest. Requests the Bishop consider the services of Fr Mason for Southwold. A letter from the Bishop of 1 November 1895 required "£110 a year or £80 and a House" before placing a priest, but Mr Crimmen believes that the figures (of the collection) and the continued generosity of visitors demonstrate that this is now possible (over time).
Crimmen, James (1840-1922)Houses are difficult to come by and are expensive when available. Better to wait for land to become available and rent a house instead.
Crimmen, James (1840-1922)Covering letter for "a catalogue of plots of ground for sale in Southwold" [not present]. Hoping the Bishop will have a suggestion fro securing one.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Letter text: "I beg to inform you that your three months is up and before I take proceedings I wish to know what you intend doing". [... Glover]
CorrespondentUpdating the Bishop on the continuing matter of Mr [& Mrs Glover] who "... is acting .. to drive me out of Southwold irrespective of Your Lordship's pleasure..." via threats of publication [no indication about what]. Withdrawal of some annual subscriptions versus promises of new one. Assures the Bishop that he remains confident of the good opinion of all the people who would deeply resent any interference.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Forwards Mr Glover's letter to the Bishop; Mr William Crimmen's attitude remains as at 21st ultimo.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Envelop addressed to Bishop, Northampton; 1 penny stamp
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Land owner, Mr Johnson, requires £700 instead of £500 for a piece of land of 7025 feet. One month's refusal given.
Requests for advice / dispensation for a marriage between two residents of Spain who want to be married in August.
Thanks the bishop for his Form of Application and asks if he still feels the benefits of East Coast air.
Donation of £400 advised by Fr Scott for purchase of land.. Have £100 in funds. All in fund account. Await Bishop to select site.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Details the significant business concerns held by Mr James Crimmen; he may have to sell Manor House (where the Oratory is located). Mr Crimmen has made many sacrifices for the mission and the situation greatly distresses him.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. Await events but meanwhile collect what you can for part of a church on new site."
side 1: plan of plot dated "1901"
side 2: "Freehold - but a tithe of about 1/ per year. Price asked 600£" / "Drainage laid already" / "Lowest cost of houses. 600£" / "Not more than 2 houses shall be guilt on any one lot."
Annie Allnutt congratulates the Bishop n withholding consent to start building in Southwold. She is concerned over the low level of involvement of Mr & Mrs Crimmen in the recent visit by the Bishop, given their generosity in time and resources for the Mission. Asks the Bishop to be quite sure that Fr Mason is the right priest in the right place. Comments on his approach to certain congregation members of good standing - her own "unpardonable sin is that I advised Fr Mason some years ago to quit Southwold at once and seek a post in the Bishop's House where he would have work and supervision; he being young, full of life and animal spirits and fond of the good things in life." Comments that the building fund has not increased in years (except for the £100 donated by the Bishop) in spite of fund raising events.
CorrespondentThanks the Bishop for authorising his appeals; explains costs associated with appeals can outweigh income from them. £100 only in Church Fund. Beautiful site (paid for by the Benefactress, who built Lowestoft Church); 60 in congregation (from 12/15 at start); decent chapel in town with a fair rent - need a priest's house more than a church. The wooden chapel from Birmingham suggested by the Bishop would be too small to accommodate 150-200 in Summer.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)£92 in Church Fund. Appeals' returns almost nil. Anonymous lady donor given £400 towards new Church site - Fr Scott believes she may help again. Requests permission for an exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on titular Feast of the Mission.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Requests a meeting to discuss Mission. [Anonymous lady donor] Miss A Auld wished to enter Religious Life - describes her intentions with respect to endowments to the Mission. She wishes to see the Bishop - can he arrange that?
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Awaiting details from Miss Auld's will. Spending too much on the house will attract rates higher than current rent. The Poor Mission Fund payments of £25 per year are to be discontinued. A new church will do much good, as the Bishop said at the Norwich Congress "Englishmen will not go for their religion to a barn".
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Will now proceed with estimates, tenders, etc. Asks permission to erect a Lady Altar to "Our Lady of Pity". Expects an increase in congregation in the next year. Would Bishop pray for the repose of the soul of Fr Mason's mother?
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Acknowledges that he has not sent on the special collections - usually does them at the end of the year, but had Influenza. Sending collections to the various collectors and will do this immediately after the collection from now on. News that a large sugar beet factory is to open nearby which will be of great benefit to the place and to the Mission.
manuscript annotation: "Thanks: [illegible] [illegible] on Sugar-beet!"
