"A 57-strong group of mostly young diocese of East Anglia pilgrims spent almost two weeks at World Youth Day in Portugal, having a fun, joyful and life-enriching time. Before leaving the UK, the group had a Sending Mass at Our Lady Immaculate and St Etheldreda in Newmarket, where Bishop Peter Collins said: 'It is the duty of the young to show enthusiasm, to be filled with vigour, physically and spiritually'". "Young pilgrims from East Anglia visited Ponte de Lima in Portugal as part of World Youth Day preparations and took part in a flag-waving Mass of 5,000 people - and saw a priest leading a rave. The day started with morning prayer led by Fr Luke Goymour, before we all boarded a coach to Ponte de Lima, the oldest large town in Portugal, to join with 5,000 other World Youth Day pilgrims from across the Viana de Castelo diocese which is hosting us." The Religious renewal which has taken Roman Catholics "along new ways and strange paths", will be strongly reinforced by the Bishop of East Anglia, the Rt Rev Alan Clark, when he addresses 20,000 from every corner of his diocese tomorrow (Sunday June 30), at 3pm.
His message is that the reappraisal and renewal signposted by the Second Vatican Council have transformed and enriched the force of the Church.
