Pope Gregory XVI's Apostolic Letter requesting prayers "for the bretheren of the Church in Spain" "..the object of severe persecution, outrage and insult..." "... as must shortly end in the destruction of Catholic faith and piety."
Pg3: manuscript letter: "Dear Sir, I have made arrangements for confirming in Norfolk and Suffolk this Spring, and propose being at Cossey for the purpose on Sunday May 22nd hoping that day may suit your convenience. I am sorry to say I can report no progress in my [missing]ment with good[?] Dr Walsh, and much fear that there will be no satisfactory result. As fas as its a trial and disapppointment, I must say, God's will be done. I chiefly regret that religion in our parts should be the sufferer. With sincere regard believe me, Yours truly in Xt. +Wm. Gifford Hall was leased for two years (to June 1844) with the purpose of establishing an ecclesiastical seminary. "I did expect, in this rather spirited step, to have been supported and encouraged so far as to be enabled to erect in Suffolk something of a regular building suitable for our Seminary purposes. "I am sorry to have to state (absit verbo invidia) [the word envyis absent] that my expectations have been disappointed, and I must be content with less than I expected." He will therefore set up in Northampton instead - requires £1000 which must be possible from those in 9 counties.

Every clergyman of all ranks is helping both through prayer and physical acts. Appeal for the relief of the suffering in France through a general collection supported by all of the Hierarchy.
