Part of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St Edmund Parish, Hunstanton

Sisters came 23 July 1903 and for 3 or 4 months had a Dominican or secular priest for all the services. Bishop Riddell then sent Fr Garnett, requesting them to provide £40 per year (plus collection money from the Convent Chapel). Masses were held at the priest's house and when the "little church was opened" services were held their instead. 18 months ago Fr Garnett wanted a rest on Saturdays and masses would be held instead at the Church on a Monday. The writer lists all that they do (including pay the stipend) - there are only 9 parish people. The Bishop is asked to establish a regular service to the Sisters for good order at the Convent.

Thanks the Bishop for authorising his appeals; explains costs associated with appeals can outweigh income from them. £100 only in Church Fund. Beautiful site (paid for by the Benefactress, who built Lowestoft Church); 60 in congregation (from 12/15 at start); decent chapel in town with a fair rent - need a priest's house more than a church. The wooden chapel from Birmingham suggested by the Bishop would be too small to accommodate 150-200 in Summer.

Fr Wilson apologies to Bishop for not getting his returns back earlier; the Canon had spoken to him. Fr Wilson asks for advice on the situation that now faces him with regard to the Studio (bought by Mr Pauling at the start of the Mission). Let by Fr Ketterer to Mr Smith, who died in June, for 3 or 5 years at £10 per annum. Mr Smith has sub-let to Mr Cotman for 3 years at £20 a year from last Michaelmas. When Fr Wilson came last February, the rent had not been paid. Mr Smith's affairs were bankrupt and so the offer was 7/- in the £, which was accepted by the creditors. The rent was paid on 1st December. Mr Day made a proposal over the rent but Fr Wilson did not understand what was being said even after several attempts at requesting clarification. The Studio had been let to the County Council for cookery lessons and some expenses have arisen from that with other repairs. Fr Wilson thinks this should all be settled prior to him taking back the lease. Perhaps a letter from the Diocesan Solicitor might elicit a clearer explanation from Mr Day (who "... has a pretty general reputation for sharp practice...").

There is a "tangle" with Fr Ketter legally letting the property from 13 January 1908 for 3 years. Outlines the situation, comments on standing their ground and refusing to pay for others expenditure (but that will mean constraining Mr Cotman's goods) and suggests that a compromise deal with Cotman as "our tenant". He will see the Bishop on Wednesday to discuss.
Manuscript notes in a different hand [Bishop Keating?]:
"Think over these points between now and Wednesday...." [lists a number of questions ]

Letter to Bishop supporting Mr Lockwood to rent be a tenant. 7s 1d is too much rent - Mr Ollard says this is so) suggests 6s 6d. The celebrated Mrs Pompery has returned, called, and will come back. Fr Freeland seems to e gaining strength as he writes in a very cheerful tone.

The Duke (Henry Fitzalan Howard 15th Duke of Norfolk) will provide aid for the Congress (3rd National Catholic Congress held in Norwich in 1912) but has advised to hold off for an application until after Christmas. £5 spent on chapel at Diss, which will be more comfortable in consequence.
Wymondham accommodation offers: 1. hotel room for £30 per annum; 2. Old brush factory - very large - £15 plus upkeep; 3. ("providential") Sketch attached - hobby build but most "ecclesiastical" - £40 (Canon prefers £35 )
Canon describes the last offer at length. An organ builder and Registrar of Births, who was most interested during the motor mission, heard of their difficulties and offered his building which is done up like a Catholic church: decent organ to be left, water stoup, capable of 60 person seating, considerable amount of oak from the old Abbey worked into it. (sketch attached). What to do? Would like to close the offer at once.
Mr Jermingham is trying to get the Beckett Memorial Chapel - but odds are against it as the vicar wants to rent it and he is on the board!

Awaiting details from Miss Auld's will. Spending too much on the house will attract rates higher than current rent. The Poor Mission Fund payments of £25 per year are to be discontinued. A new church will do much good, as the Bishop said at the Norwich Congress "Englishmen will not go for their religion to a barn".

Fr Howard reports to the Bishop on the 11 days of lectures, finished on Sunday, at Wymondham. 50 to 150 attending; earnest and sympathetic; some now under instruction; Sunday School to start for 15 children. Benediction created a sensation and the little church was packed. Parson good organiser and very energetic but is impulsive and wild in his statements. They are looking forward to the Bishop visiting for Confirmation.

Mr Charles Russell, solicitor, writing to the Bishop regarding a cheque for £500 from Mr George Pauling for the St Ives Endowment Fund to be added to the original £1,500. The trust deed is being requested to enable this action to be completed. "Mr Pauling would be very glad if you would kindly as suggested, have Foundation Masses arranged for Mr Pauling and deceased members of his Family".
