Discussion document on the proposed Roman document on Mixed Marriages. Whereas such a marriage is stated as being "illicit"; this implies that they are "valid". The requirement to not place impediments in the way of the Catholic partner, may be seen as unreasonable since the non-Catholic partner's head of church makes no such request. All that has to be done is to attend confession, after the marriage in a non-catholic church, and then can access the sacraments like any other.
Has an ecumenical impact for [Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC)].
Covering letter for a note on the proposal for handling mixed marriages. A stumbling block. May not stay on the International Commission [ARCIC?] is the Cardinal's proposals go through.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Thank you for your letter. Had not realised the celebration may be used as a protest about the Synod vote for Anglican/Methodist reunion. Will arrange an ordination to attend.
Guazzelli, Victor Rev (1945-2004)13 May in the Paddington area to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of opening of the Anglican Shrine at Walsingham. This is a week after the synod vote on Anglican/Methodist reunion. There may be a protest against this scheme there. Rather delicate position for the RCs as we cannot be seen publicly associating with opposition to the scheme.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Brother Reinhold Zielinski, a Dominican student at Cambridge, recently ordained to the Diaconate has asked if Bishop Clark would ordain him as a priest at Trinity College.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Will be in America for the whole of June - please advice Brother Zielinski.
Bishop's OfficeReport of the October meeting of CCEE - page 7, Ireland issuing a document on "Europe and the Third World" - please advise who is busy on this report.
Mahon, Gerald Rev (1922-1992)Suggest contact Cardinal Conway as I imagine the document is being prepared by the Irish Justice and Peace Commission.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Consideration of using a BCC consultant.
Worlock, Derek John Harford Rev (1920-1996)Cannot invite a consultant to attend a plenary session of the Bishops' Conference. Have a separate meeting at the Archbishop's House for an informal discussion. Cardinal suggested Bp Butler and Bp Clark arrange this meeting and then Bp Clark raise the point at the plenary session.
Worlock, Derek John Harford Rev (1920-1996)Suggestion for BCC consultant to attend and answer questions. Bp Warlock's answer is attached.
Louis Bouyer's book, L'Eglise de Dieu has the right background for the International Commission discussions.
If one substitutes for "relationship" the word "communion" - then could have said: every Christian is in a real (though sometimes imperfect) communion with the Roman Catholic Church. One could say same thing not only about individual separated brethren but about their "churches or ecclesial communities". cf "The Theology of Vatican II' pp 124-134.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Gordon Wheeler's reply on the Common Bible: hope he makes the proposal as from the Liturgical Commission. Cardinal seemed favourable to it.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Bp Clark's pamphlet on the Virgin Birth - thoroughly scholarly and enlightening. Like to see it published. The public's general obsession with sex means that there might be unfortunate effects with the treatment of "clauso utero" and "intactum hymen". Grateful for the personal help as after his conversion he was led to believe that unless he accepted the clauso utero he should have "made shipwreck of the faith".
BP Clark's sermon on TV this morning will have done a lot of good.
Right that the pamphlet on the Virgin Birth is not for CTS and will submit it to the Heythrop Theological Review, or similar. It is the virginal conception which is at issue.
Enjoyed "A Time to Speak".
Suggests several potential publications in which to place the pamphlet. The three Tablet articles are to be sent to members of ARCIC.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Will try Theological Studies for the pamphlet. Good idea to send Butler's three Tablet articles to members of ARCIC. Working with Dick Stewart on the presentation for the Episcopal Conference [of England and Wales ECEW)]. Working on the pamphlet "The Virgin Birth" and hopes that he has not bitten off more than he can chew, but it will need much chewing before making it simpler.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Copies of articles sent to all ARCIC members. Like to see Tillard's paper on Priesthood and Ministry.
R [René] Lourentine's great study of the first two chapters of St Luke's Gospel hints that St Luke's information may have come to him, via the circle of which St John was the centre, from Our Lady. Impressed that while St Luke presents information representing her point of view, the infancy narratives of St Matthew is through the eyes of St Joseph.
Happy weekend ordaining and visiting at East Bergholt. The Virgin Birth pamphlet is nearing completion. Discussion about traditional arguments about the virgin birth not being apodictic but only suasive.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Herewith the manuscript of "The Virgin Birth". Feel might be overstretching my competency - hop not. May revise text after reading Laurentin which arrived this morning.
