Notes headed "Letters 1914". Details of failure to pay cheques with suggestions to ask Bishop to advance annual payment of £125. Notes provision in Will for extra £125 to be paid to Bishop in case she [Mrs Ten Broeck?] dies before 1917.
Bishop's Comments "Sent to Harrington 1922"
Re Prospectus. Not school in strict sense. He takes only abnormal boys for supervision & treatment. The "Prospectus" is a camouflage to save the feelings of parents of mental boys whose friends might find out that they are in March. Reports good progress of one pupil. Pupils medically examined. Once cure effected boys can be taught by qualified teacher. Apologises for thoughtlessness. Always anxious to make right any wrong.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Builder getting on well with new presbytery. 1st payment nearly due. Hopes Ollard has sent cheque for 2 houses, all money is paid in.
Bishop annotation: "1st I heard about Presbytery being started! Will pay nothing out until officially informed money all paid in & made over to me! Do not pay what you realised by concert"
He had given Ollard full instructions re money. Saw him again & he had forgotten what Fr Clare had told him & deposited money at bank. Said he would put matters right at once. Only made £11 as expenses very heavy. Better than nothing.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)He has just written to Canon Tonks re letter from him about Presbytery accounts. Believes misunderstanding exists. Writes to explain & goes into details.
Bishop annotation: "New bill will have to be put into a businesslike way by Canon Tonks. No extras may be ordered without leave of Bishop. June 12 1925."
Young RC man (George Joseph Ringham, 22) working away, wishing to marry protestant girl (Hilda Cook, 22). Fr Clare sent form to priest & asked him to witness promises. As letters are delayed by general strike would Bishop grant dispensation. Bad days - whole of March is on strike.
Bishop annotation: "Sent Dispens. May 19 1926".
Asks for faculty for erection of new set of Stations of the Cross. They are the work of v. clever artist. He is publishing part of his grandfather's diary. Should he omit page re political conduct of some priests in Tipperary.
Bishop annotation: "1. Sent faculty to erect stations X. 2. Omit the part of the diary telling of actions of some of the priests up to no good, and bring work in for me. Leave this to lay historians or native Irish. As matter of Canon Law, send me matter and book before you publish a bomb as you have ?? unfortunately ??! July 19 1926".
He wrote to Commercial Union Insurance on hearing of Fr Stanley's death. Premium had been paid. Builders doing good job with presbytery. Fr Filmer great Missionary. Moving out in 2 days.
Bishop annotation: "Make enquiries re insurance. Keep an eye on building work; you will be living in it; no alterations can be made once it is up."
Father Filmer is to give 10 day Mission in December at March. Asks for faculties for him if he has not already got them for the Diocese. 2 good Catholics moving to March. Town is growing at a huge pace.
Bishop "Fr Filmer already has faculties. Good luck & success with the Mission"
Gives Bishop good wishes for Christmas & coming year. Fr Filmer's Mission had rather poor attendance on some days but he believes results will be good as already three are under Instruction & possibility of more to follow.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Encloses suggested plan (sketch) for new church. Anxious to start to find money now. Suggests making use of existing walls & to add on 30ft which would include sanctuary, sacristy & vestry for servers. Architect's rough estimate is £2,300. If Bishop approves he will get more detailed specifications and plans.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Enclosed photo of new presbytery to be finished by end of month. Reports return of illness. Asks if he knows name of a specialist. Asks for grant from Sick Clergy Fund. May he take liquid food between 2 Easter Sunday Masses at Romsey & March?
Bishop gives advice on food, occupying presbytery, specialist, and claiming from SCF
Encloses form asking permission to receive 2 men into Church. Reminding him that Fr Filmer will be giving Mission at March next month for 10 days. Asking him to grant faculties. Annotation: "All granted".
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Identifies the boy as son of Gordon Cleather. Boy suffered from night terrors, nerves and knew not the meaning of "obedience". Much improved situation. Understood that the boy would have been certified insane otherwise. In which case he could not have cared for him as he'd found out where he stood in law before taking him on. Would Bishop contact Dr Evison if in doubt.
Bishop annotation: "Don't let care of boy interfere with your duties as Missionary for March, Chatteris & Ramsay. ?? 12 1925".
Fr Page had told him Bishop would want to know if Church had a damp course. Fr Clare says it has. He would think builder would not bother to put one in a Granary.
Bishop annotation: "Thanks. But have you never considered future use of Barn - Church as a club room? Feb 23/26".
Hopes to have about £105 for New Church Fund from proceeds of bazaar. Small congregation worked very hard & had good support from Nonconformists. Should he put money in bank account in his & Fr Allen's name. MS is not yet finished (but will send on) after finished consulting books and writing letters.
Bishop annotation: "Yes, put money into deposit acc. Add my name to yours and Fr Allen's Dec 22 1927".
Pleased that Bishop agrees with his proposition re Grandfather's diary and will send MS to him. Says it will only be of interest to those interested in Irish affairs. Several famous Irish people had read it and approve. Foreword is by TP Gill - he describes Gill as a Parnell supporter; an editor of "Catholic World" (1885-92) in America; gave up Irish politics an became known as "Neutral Gill"
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Had letter from Mgr Freeland refusing Levett's offer of £1200. Offer now £1400. If Bishop accepts, it would mean building Presbytery next to present church immediately. The debt would decrease to £175.
Bishop annotated reply: "Identical letter sent to Mgr Freeland, Answered both to him; vide note on this letter"
Thanks him for wires received. Levett willing to pay £1450 for property. Hopes he will not change his mind. Ollard will see him this morning as Fr Clare sent details re price last night. He is feeling much better at present. Margate contact address is "Berkely House, Dalby Square, Margate".
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Encloses photo of the Indulgence just received from photographer. Hopes Bishop will be able to get renewal of Indulgence as Fr Clare is out to get all the spiritual privileges he can for "our little church".
