Letter from Barbara Cornish (representing CWL R&R of the Norwich and Norfolk Refugee Support Group) to CWL members East Anglia Branch. Communication by refugees is difficult; cash problem is acute; well aware that they are relying on charity and wish to work but are not allowed to.

Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Translation from the Latin text:
Blessing of the enclosed image by his Holiness chosen by His Eminence for the restoration of the ancient Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in King's Lynn, Requested by Fr Philip Fletcher (Master of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Ranson) and Fr George Wrigglesworth.
Approved and praise the chosen Icon of the Holy Mother of God, at an audience with Leo XIII on 6 February 1897
Signed by the Cardinal Vicar of [Rome]
endorsed by Arthur, Bishop of Northampton on 22 February 1897
Ask Bardell if he would build the school for £400 down and the rest to follow within 3 years with [5%] interest following completion of the school. A personal [?] contract to be signed.
Wrigglesworth, George Rev (1851-1900)On 12th Captain Curties met the bishop to discuss his relationship with Fr Wrigglesworth. He is aggrieved they are not friendly. he will make any restitution or reparation that is required . The bishop will be glad to hear form Fr W on this subject. "Of course this has nothing to do with confession".
Riddell, Arthur George Rev (1836-1907)[Copied by order of Bishop by his secretary]
The three matters claimed by Fr Wrigglesworth are decided by the Bishop. 1. School account - to receive deficit only, not full amount; 2. payment for coal at 16/- per ton i.e. £4; 3. Gas stove to be sent to Fr Wrigglesworth; 4. Repairs to WC to be born by Fr Wrigglesworth as they pre-date Canon Osman.
Just received a telegram that Canon Osman is dangerously ill.
£500 is guaranteed by the bishop. Ask Mr Bardell to build the school to the satisfaction of the architect for £785. Instructions regarding the contract and payment amounts and timings. The rest of the money required will be provided by the diocese. The present school can be offered for sale (should get £100. the bishop has the freehold deeds. The lawyer was Mr J Maxwell Witham of 5 Grays Inn Square, London WC.
Riddell, Arthur George Rev (1836-1907)Describes the plans sent to him by Fr Wrigglesworth as being impracticable - both in cost and to build. Cannot see how Mr Nicholl will be able to ask for payment for such plans.
Riddell, Arthur George Rev (1836-1907)Had called on Mr Nicholl but he had just gone out. The Tablet's article had two errors: 1 the cost was £1274.10.0 not £2000; 2. The church would be build whole not in part. You must have known that one plan would be rejected and the other was too costly. Already told you that your claim is unreasonable as both plans were quite unsuitable.
Riddell, Arthur George Rev (1836-1907)Bishop is shocked - the area is deprived with widespread responsibilities and he thought it would be an Augustinian priority. Cannot see how to dissuade what must have been a difficult decision. He will leave a decision to his successor - possibly an announcement in Summer with appointments in September 1995.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop thanks him for the book; looks forward to reading it all; will plug it in the next Ad Clerum which is due out soon.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Thanks Fr Connolly for the letter, cheque & cash all of which are appreciated. Relayed expressions of appreciation from parishioners for Fr Connolly's ministry. Also thanks him for excellent work done in the chaplaincy team in Notre Dame.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Repeats the content of the original letter from Rev Dr Franz Fellinger and encloses the interrogatory (not available) to be put to Mr B Boulos. The Bishop delegates Fr Courtney to do this in the presence of a responsible person to act as a notary.
Side 2, Notary's handwritten record of answers to the questions put:
"1. Yes I have been disarrayed.
- The accusation is false.
- Indignantly denies having been to house of prostitution
- Denies walking out with a dancing woman or any woman.
- It is not true denies both points of accusation
[undecipherable 5 words] by me (signed) Bishara Boulos"

Subject to Bishop Wood's approval he is quite happy to see the chapel used for Muslim worship. Only difficulty if Christian symbols were thereby excluded from the Chapel and sensitive issues around the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament there. ".. it cannot just be a worshipping area - but must be regarded as a Christian Chapel basically for Christian worship."
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop encloses the normal advice for his arrival which contains the form of Blessing, etc., which may be useful. Programme fine. Believes Mgr. Forbes to be an old Scots College companion. Has to leave on Monday. Will try to come for Friday from King's Lynn where he will be for the Pilgrimage on Thursday 12th.
