Advising that Certificate #2 is due for payment - £400 to the contractor and £32 fee for Architects. Fr Davidson has made arrangements for Canon Tonks to meet payment.
Arthur Young / Allan D ReidPage 1: apologises for not sending enclosed receipt - away on holiday
Page 2: Typed receipt on headed paper for £28 in connection with proposal for new church in Aldeburgh
Bishop has not signed the Deed of Conveyance - returned for signature, otherwise cannot proceed.
Bertram R YorkeReceived the conveyance document. Enclosed deed relates to Fr Delaney selling surplus plots to Mr Reade . They are not needed as a new plot has been bought for the Church. Arrange for the document to be signed by the Bishop and returned.
Bertram R YorkeBishop Cary quotes a letter to Fr Delaney dated 19/12/1919 from Bishop Keating. In it the £110 from Sr Superior (Ursulines) for 4 annual Masses and a commemorative tablet in the new [Aldeburgh] church has been invested by the Board of Finance. It is the wish of the community that £50 given to Canon Tonks last August should be added to the larger sum and used for the Endowment or Building Fund. Bishop Keating is willing for the surplus to be used as such but notes that she does not wish it to be used the temporary Oratory.
Bishop Cary directs Canon Tonks to look at the books at about or anterior to that date.
Outlines rent, conditions, charges for hirer for Canon Tonks with respect to Crockerhill.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Page from the middle of an exercise book. Accounts for Fr Irwin's supply at "Aldeburgh cum Leiston" from 12 August to 16 September 1923. Includes sum of £7 requested by Fr Irwin for supply. Also "Charwoman for scrubbing down house on Aug 6, 7, 8th - 13/6d.
Canon Peacock owed £9.1.2 1/2 [presumably from the Bishop?]. "Accounts sent herewith... 26 September 1923." [to Canon Tonks?]
Fr Davidson provides a detailed explanation of what he asked Reade to do and what was done. Reade is of the opinion that he is owed commission which is less than that which a Woodcocks Estate Agent would have charged.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BA£400 due at end of month. Has asked Mr Reade to send bill to Canon Tonks. Arrangements for payment may involve a post-dated cheque as Fr Davidson wishes to see this small builder paid early. [Bishop manuscript annotation: "Do with this (Canon Tonks) as you see fit, i.e. send cheque at once or wait till Davidson's return"]. Fr Davidson will try to raise more money in Spain with help of the Spanish lady here. Lost the Bishop's questions regarding Religious Instruction - but says there are 14[13?] in Aldeburgh and 12 in Leiston who attend Catechism; he does extra help for individual cases. [Bishop manuscript annotation: [?] another copy [?][?]full up!]. Parnell trouble: with the Bishop's support Fr Davidson will have the strength to deal with her (described as a bully and ultimately a coward) and be friendly but not discuss parish business. A Real hope for the Church by December.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAThe Cardinal, a patron of the nuns [Serafini?], is visiting Woodbridge and lunching at Aldeburgh. Can the Bishop attend for lunch on 24th? heard from Canon Tonks. Does not need funds raised from sale of land; considers the house is sufficient and needs a little work. Hence the request for a mortgage of £100 to enable him to address the house and grounds.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Sorry cannot come to lunch on 24th. You must do the honours for the Card. If you can do without more money then I shall be grateful. The money for sale of old [indecipherable] , Normanhurst land go towards purchase of Normanhurst; U.S. Maryland[?] goes towards old liabilities. Fr Long will be no good to you for a long time."
Acknowledging Fr Davidson's letter and the Bishop's instructions to take on the matter of the sale of the land. Requesting the deeds to prepare the contract.
Jackaman & SonsMr & Mrs Hutchinson are the right sort of people. The house will want painting on the outside - but not an expensive job. Asks for a Diocesan loan of £30 to cover the bills already forwarded. The Tower has been such a source of expense - most of which he has tackled.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAUncertain about what to do about the house [Crockerhill?]. Not allowed to go in, nor knows the position on letting it. Will try to get £80 rent. Fr Davidson is aware Mrs Simpson has written to the Bishop but has had nothing to do with it. It will be an asset to the parish. He does not know the state of the place which has been vacant for a year.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAVery grateful for the loan of £30. A great help and encouragement.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAUndated.
Thanks for cheque - the increase is very acceptable. In a year's time the parish will be in a very different financial position, but assistance now is cheering.
Mrs Hutchinson decided not to rent Crockerhill. Rev Mother has provided an estimate for using it as a Catholic Hostel. She would be low risk. Fr Davidson might try that himself for French or other foreign students.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAHe will send on Dr Somers' receipt. He did not employ Mr Reade; he acted for the buyer.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAMr Hutchinson will write soon - very interested in the house - the right sort of people. Want to rent for a year with an option for 3 years or 7 years or more. Wish to lay on gas and build a garage. Rent £80. "You must admit I acted speedily"
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAEncloses his reply / explanation about Reade and commission. Reade will drop claim is a lot of trouble is caused by it.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAReceipt of cheque for £6.10.0 for service of Leiston.
