Writing from 16 Buckingham Palace Mansions, Grovesnor Gardens, London SW
Long interested in Our Lady's cause - 1911 founded the "Society of Lourdes", 1914 Celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes at the Pro-Cathedral kensington, 1923 met the bishop at "Hotel de la Chapelle" in Lourdes. Proposes a pilgrimage to Walsingham and is asking permission for Benediction at the Slipper Chapel. Fr Gray (Fakeham) suggests this has to be sought from the Bishop.

Some 30 years ago the Shrine of Our L. of W. was opened with blessing of Pope Leo XIII at King's Lynn, to take the place, for practical purposes, of an old Walsingham. The H. Father himself selected and blessed the statue of O. L. of W. It is now in this minitaure replica of the H. House of Lourdes in the Church of K.L. There is a pilgrimage every year conducted by the Guild of O. L. of Ransom. on [?] Thursday in honour of O. L. of W. as recreated at K.L. This one, therefore, is the official pilgrimage to O. L. of W. & I do not wish it otherwise. Of course, I cannot prevent [?] [?] visits to the old ruins which are now in private Prot. hands but they cannot be public or official - the Slipper Chapel is unusable. with blessing "

Catholic Association and herself are both unaware of a Shrine at King's Lynn. Fr Gray had provided details and Lady Gurney[?] had written that the priest from King's Lynn and 60 pilgrims had gone to the abbey ruins last summer. She thought it was a similar situation with that at Westminster Abbey where many Catholics go on the feast of St Edward. Hopes that the bishop will consider renewing greater devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham.

Received money from Tonks. Bathroom to start after the pilgrimage. Admits to an ommission regarding obtaining the bishop's approval for the design and installation of the confessional [refers to "Linthout's letter"]. Article in the Universe from Fr Stokes about the shrine. Fr Filmer has "rubbed it in" in "Second Spring".

Miss V Gavin writing from Williamson's Hotel, Hunstanton.Re Walsingham, it is a matter of regret that the Catholics possess nothing which might be used as a shrine or site for a church. Advising the bishop of her discovery that a property, "The Friary", is to be let and is situated amongst the ruins of the friary itself. Walsingham is becoming an Anglican stronghold with the new shrine, a hospice for pilgrims, a repository and a workshop.
Details are: £60 per annum, agents: Messrs Falcon & Birkbeck, Estate Office, Coltishall, Norwich.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. Present official Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Walsingham is at K. Lynn, there is a statue officially chosen blessed by Pope Leo XIII in the basilica of the house of Lorretto. Old Walsingham pilgrimage ended with its destruction under Henry VIII. Oct 1/30"

Ernest Oldmeadow having held back the tide of correspondence regarding Walsingham for many years, suggests that Pope Leo XIII's decision [relating to the shrine at Kings Lynn] was only a provisional one. There are too many catholics going abroad on their pilgrmages. The time is right (no difficulty in getting some money togther) for Walsingham and Holywell to come into their own. This can be done without causing unpleasantmness with the Anglicans.

The policy on this was formulated by Bp Riddell. The seat of the old Walsingham shrine was utterly destroyed - nothing remains except for some ruins in Protestant hands. King's Lynn was where Leo XIII placed the shrine. What the Anglicans do is their affair. Some Catholics think differently and advertise their pilgrimages in the Tablet - until he contacted the Tablet. Continue to remind enquirers that the shrine is at King's Lynn, an old port through which the bulk of pilgrims from the Continent made their way to the famous old Shrine.
Apologies for the shortness of the letter as still in bed with pneumonia.

Intends to make his pilgrimage to the ancient site of the shrine of Our Ladye [sic] ofWalsingham. As the Slipper Chapel is now diocesan property can he have permission to say private mass there, will also take a small Altar statue.

He acknowledges the bishop refusal to grant his request. Facts are: he makes a pilgrimage to Walsingham every year and occasionally goes on to Kong's Lynn where Fr Stokes kindly allows him to say mass at the shrine. Cannot understand why it is wrong to visit the ancient site at Walsingham and kneel where hundreds of our forefathers went. He is distressed that there will soon be no catholic presence at Walsingham once the present provost Vicar leaves or dies.

Clipping [Norfolk Fair?]; copy; Letter text:
"Dear Sir,
In October's copy of Norfolk Fair, there is a photograph of part of a religious procession from St John's, now the Catholic Cathedral here in Norwich. Underneath is the date, given as about 1930s.
In the 1930s a great event took place at St John's, which I believe was the 50th anniversary of the opening of St John's in 1894. This marvellous edifice succeeded the Roman Catholic church built in 1794 in Maddermarket Church Alley. We know it as the Maddermarket theatre. The Stranger's Hall nearby, was used for exactly one hndred years as the recorty.
Going back to the episode depicted in the photograph, I personally remember it quite well. Although not a Catholic myself, I was supplied with a ticket to attend the pontifical high mass at 11 am on this particular Sunday, which I believe took place either during July or August of 1934.
This mass was sung and celebrated by the Archbishop of Cardiff, Mostyn by name, the doyen of the hierarchy at that time. It was sung in the presence of Cardinal Bourne of Westminster. In the afternoon the cardinal, archbishop, bishops and laity journeyed to open the slipper chapel at Walsingham. The procession of the Blessed Sacrament too place outside, in Norwich for the first time since the Reformation. The sacred host was carried under a white, richly-embrodered canopy held over the heads of the dignitaries, with the monstrance. Supporting staves were held by four Knights of St Columba."
