The drainage system work will start soon. The council is making up Sandringham Road and will place a lamp outside the church (at no cost to us!). Fr Flynn has secured a promise for a Catholic burial ground in the new cemetery - a consecration will be required when they get started on that.
P.s. Fr Flynn had heard that the Canon had got as close as Lynn and suggests next time he comes a bit closer as there is always a room available.
Does not have the Hunstanton Log book' but notes there was a book with cuttings and photographs of the early mission and thinks he handed it over with other Mission papers to his successor. If he does still have them then they'd be stored with is furniture at Sudbury. Canon garnet should be able to provide the required information. Mr Shanks was the builder who did maintenance work on the bell as well as created the turret and having hung the bell there.
Flynn, Charles S Rev (-1943)Sending the enclosed direct to Canon Tonks as the Bishop has said the Diocese had already decided to pay.
Manuscript annotation "£191".
Sorry to hear the bell has fallen through the roof - illustrates the need for a periodical inspection of all ecclesiastic buildings. Sketch and description of the belfry at Hunstanton. Considers the school chimney stacks at Bury St Edmunds which had to be replaced lest a child get killed by one falling. Offers advice on keeping the chimney cleaned. Not kept bell bill - installed around 1907-1909 - but provides [not present] supplier's address. If Fr Flynn had not take away the bound log book with St Edmund K & M [sic] Hunstanton, I used to keep details of benefactors, gifts, dates, photos and anything of interest about the mission. "Goodness knows what it was to him."
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)Personal Loan from the Finance Board; will increase insurance policy from £75 to £100; Canon Tonks to fill in the form and send to Century Insurance in Ipswich. Not at all well. Lady Winefride has invited him to stay - so he will go one Sunday in Lent. Can the Poor Mission Fund do something for Hunstanton. "I have had a rotten time & am likely to while the war lasts & even afterwards for a time while people recover the strain on their resources."
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)Sending Canon Tonks the premium for the policy. Going on retreat at St Edmunds given by Fr Hugh Pope OP, Prior of Woodchester, a nice man I am told. "... retreats, usually depress me & do me no good I fancy...". Fr Cameron is here and it's a good opportunity as Old Hall is nearer and less expensive than further afield. "Fr Parker must have had a bad smash as I hear he can't say Mass yet."
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)A £25 cheque sent in final settlement of the £75 loan from the Diocese for building additions to the Church in Hunstanton.
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)Mgr Freeland says estimates for work at Hunstanton was sent on to the Finance Board. Not hearing anything, but needing to get the work done before the estimate is revised he has had painting done, a new oven, a new copper and received a rates demand recently. If the Board can relieve him of the debt, £29, it would help.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Bell has fallen through the roof and caused significant damage. Have told the original church builders, Messrs Shanks, to repair the damage. Cannot pay for the repairs - hope the Finance Board will. As Fr Flynn took the parish books have no idea who made the bell - please advise so Shanks send it away. Collections not good; visitors have very little money - last Sunday 6 farthings in the plate. However, an appeal at 2 collections received £6-1-9.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Been trying to elicit a response from Fr Flynn about the nature of the Foundation Masses - he does not reply; there is no Mission book, only Registers. Could Canon Tonks advise on the obligations related to the £1-13-7 received.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Quotes Canon Tonks' letter "there is a much larger application being made for repairs at Sudbury". Cannot understand this as he explains with examples of his efforts to ensure the Sudbury buildings were properly maintained - within his own finances. But, "It is a wretchedly rotten old converted cottage." Not happy at being sent to an unsupported mission for the 3rd time - never again!... I'm feeling very fed up..." [further page(s) not present]
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Grateful for the £29 cheque for Hunstanton repairs.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Firm "Shanks" has written regarding a new bell which Fr Heptonstall has asked him to order.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)The Finance Board had offered £12 to cover some cost - but if they could stretch to the extra £4-15-0 then he'd be most grateful. Collections are at 50% less than last year!! Canon Garnett can vouch that Southgate is one of the most reasonable workmen around here.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Estimate for the Finance Committee. Very short of money - poor season - and a new anthracite stove cost £12. cannot afford to renew the kitchen. have spent heavily on maintenance and repairs - £22 in all.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)1 side: [undated] "Copy letter from Mr Currey to Mr Ollard" - plan enclosed [not present] one acre of land which Mr le Strange is prepared to grant the fee to clients. "Clients... undertake to make up that portion of roads... and pay 1/2 cost of sewer...". Plans for building to be approved by Mr le Strange and lines adhered to. Will stake out site on next visit - 24th inst. Mr le Strange regrets he cannot give a more square plot.
Side 2: [undated] "Copy letter from Mr Ollard to Mr Currey": Plan forwarded to Bishop of Northampton. Conveyancing between Bishop Riddell, Fr James Flint (High Wycombe), Canon Tonks. Pencil diagram of plot.
Liability in respect of the road was fixed, and accepted, at £190.16.0. Nothing to be done until asked for payment. The road has made a very great improvement to the Diocesan property and increased its value.
Ollard & Ollard (1903-2013)Covering letter for a demand from Hunstanton UDC (Urban District Council) for fees outstanding for making up of road.
Ollard & Ollard (1903-2013)The cheque for £201.5.2 has been received in respect of road charges and will be sent to the Clerk of Hunstanton UDC
Ollard & Ollard (1903-2013)Discussions with the Clerk of Hunstanton UDC regarding Notice served for payment/contribution to road to be constructed by Hunstanton property. 160 feet to be made up at 23/10.5 per foot - total cost to Diocese 190.16.0. Council have been friendly and helpful - exemption of cost is not possible since Fr Flynn has contented that the waste land will eventually be used to build a school.
