Sisters came 23 July 1903 and for 3 or 4 months had a Dominican or secular priest for all the services. Bishop Riddell then sent Fr Garnett, requesting them to provide £40 per year (plus collection money from the Convent Chapel). Masses were held at the priest's house and when the "little church was opened" services were held their instead. 18 months ago Fr Garnett wanted a rest on Saturdays and masses would be held instead at the Church on a Monday. The writer lists all that they do (including pay the stipend) - there are only 9 parish people. The Bishop is asked to establish a regular service to the Sisters for good order at the Convent.

"My Lord, Fr Flynn of this town has asked me to write to you as to his condition - This is the 2nd time I have been called in for the same trouble - gastritis gastric catarrh or nervous depression - He is now progressing well but I have advised to take complete rest to thoroughly restore himself - He is a very highly strung and neurotic patient - but has no organic disease to account for these attacks - I would be very happy to insure his life - I think I have cheered him up & that he will return practically fit from his holidays - Very faithfully yours D J Rygate Surgeon"

manuscript annotation: "Should a man of his temperament take alcoholic drink, or abstain from it rigorously under all circumstances, esp. fro whisky & other ardent spirits?"

W E H Bull saw Fr Flynn this week - he is ill with influenza and his nervous system is completely run down. Consider it a personal favour if the Bishop gives his request urgent consideration for Fr Flynn to have two months off for complete rest. Fr Flynn leads a lonely life and this is worse since his sister died in December.

R S Flynn (Fr Flynn's father) writes to inform the Bishop that his son has Bronchitis following on from Influenza. He might not be able to say mass on Sunday - the doctor hopes that he will. Mr Flynn, Snr. feels his son is too limp and washed out. Fr Page has been asked to help, but it is thought he too may be ill.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Too late to find a supply. Better stay in bed rather than risk after effects of "Flu" if Fr Page cannot help him."

Visited Fr Flynn, found him in a very weak condition looking an absolute wreck. Quite clear that Fr Flynn is not drinking - despite some of the comments made by others; he also takes great pride in the church and his house, again contrary to others' comments. Believes that Mr Bull was mistaking a previous condition's consequences with Fr Flynn's current situation.

Thanks the Bishop for his kind and sympathetic letter with its encouragement and advice. Feeling much better and will return from Wisbech to Hunstanton tomorrow. Fr Garnett has given the Bishop the wrong impression. Mass at 8 allows the men from the wireless stations to attend

Still suffering from the results of Bronchitis and Influenza. Dr says must get complete rest. Has arranged with Bishop's Stortford for a supply on Sunday - would the Bishop grant faculties? Will be going to a convalescent house for priests in Brighton from 12th for a time.

"I am at fault, and I must confess it. I have been ill for over a month and am only now recovering."
Provides an explanation for missing the three masses concerned: 2 when he was too ill; 1 when no-one turned up, the clocks having been changed. The family trouble (dad aged & sister dying through diabetes) was described with his inability to get to see his sister due to being needed in Hunstanton. Encloses a doctor's note.

The drainage system work will start soon. The council is making up Sandringham Road and will place a lamp outside the church (at no cost to us!). Fr Flynn has secured a promise for a Catholic burial ground in the new cemetery - a consecration will be required when they get started on that.
P.s. Fr Flynn had heard that the Canon had got as close as Lynn and suggests next time he comes a bit closer as there is always a room available.

Fr Flynn has had a thorough nervous breakdown and is in a very weak state. Not been well since he came to Hunstanton and was steadily getting worse. Agree that he must go away for a fortnight - suggest with Fr Squirrell for ten days. Fr Garnett suggests he stays in Hunstanton for that time to take care of things and explain to the congregation. Can the Bishop make arrangements for Wellingborough? Is he content with the suggestions?
postscript: "Father Flynn wish me to express his apology & regret that he is not yet in a fit state to write to you a full explanation in answer to your enquiry, but will do so later."
Annotation at top of first page: "Wire - Bishop consents to arrangement proposed."

Nobody about as the works is off for 10 days and all have gone on holiday. Leaving Wellingborough for Hunstanton and will stay for a few days as full of visitors who come for daily mass. Will be discrete in sounding people out so as not to give away his real objective. If Fr Flynn is at home then why no notice posted on the church door? He thinks something is not right and will see the Bishop when he leaves. Fr Hyde can stay till he returns [at Wellingborough?]

Thanks the Bishop effusively for his kindness. The motor is most beneficial enabling travel. It was mostly a gift supplemented by the sale of his motorcycle - "the boys enabled me to run it at not a very great cost". Seldom been so long without a pupil for his private classes which helped defray expenses. Expects some endowment which may add to £1,000 for Hunstanton and enable a successor to build a church. May replace the motorcar with a cycle-car (uses a motorcycle engine) and can run for 50 miles on a gallon of petrol.

Good midnight Mass attendance & 30 communicants. Not well - ulcerated stomach. Money is very difficult; been covering costs out of own pocket, but cannot now; he requests a loan of £25 to relieve the strain until Summer. Trying to get another foreign boy who could help in the season. Young Le Strange (from the Hall in Hunstanton) has been a regular Sunday Mass attendee for 3 months and it is possible he could be received in to the church; there is another well known person under instruction. His efforts are hampered by this "miserable High Church movement", which keeps a lot away from the Church, "what a ghastly mockery of the Church it is, yet intelligent people swallow it."

Whilst staying with friends near Hunstanton he received a call that Fr Flynn was ill and could he go to him. Fr Flynn has gastritis, nervous breakdown and is being attended to by a doctor. He will not be able to do Sunday Mass - hence request for Peterborough to cover Wisbech whilst Fr Page looks after Hunstanton. Fr Flynn had concocted a story to cover his being ill in bed and unable to to answer the [door] bell whilst the Housekeeper was away. He is not absent and regrets the tale, having seen the letter sent by the Bishop [checking on his whereabouts].

Went to Hunstanton as requested by the Bishop. Also had a letter from Mrs Ingleby. Keeping the Bishop's interest to himself. Found Fr Flynn in a very bad way and depressed for a month since the trouble with his father's and sister's health. ".. he fell into his old weakness & has been more or less under the influence & now suffering from the effects." Dr came on Monday this week and Fr Flynn has improved. He has missed several masses - blaming the change of the clocks to the new time which meant not many people attended for Mass, so he went to bed. Told straight that the Bishop must be informed - probably he knew about this even now. As his friend Fr Page does not like the subterfuge and asks the Bishop to write directly. Unfortunately a month ago Fr Page would have provided glowing testimonial for Fr Flynn; he did not know he was a wreck.
manuscript note on back of Page 5: "9.4.21 Say that you are deputed to make enquiries & report to me. Impress on him the magnitude of his offence, and necessity of penitential & submissive spirit if he is not to be summarily dismissed."

The trigger for Fr Flynn's illness was the concern he had for his family - his old complaints (Gastritis & Neurasthenia) came back and he took stimulants (but not in excess). He is very fearful and nervous of telling the Bishop of his problems - so Fr Page suggests the Bishop write to Fr Flynn and encourages him to report on the situation. Fr Page must contact and warn Mrs Ingleby as Fr Flynn is asking who may have written to the Bishop. Fr Page has promised to return to see Fr Flynn but has concerns that there might not be any trains as a number have already been taken off.
