Mrs Ten Broeck's letter asking Diocese to pay £125/yr to March for unexpired period of her undertaking has been found. New York Commission now "closed" so letter may not be used as evidence. Sends enclosures showing he did his best.
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Congratulating Fr Malone [success not described] and saying it's been an anxious time but without the trouble it would have meant less. Have a good holiday. Canon Tonks will take care of business.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Do take advantage of the dispensation - do not take risks with your health. Well done regarding the land; tell Canon Tonks of any other interest.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Enclose cheque for £1000 being sale price of March Presbytery & land. Asks him to send cheque to Ollard (less £450 mortgage). Suspects Canon forgot to tell Ollard about sending money to Bishop. Found by chance that new presbytery is being built. Money came promptly when Fr Clare told off ("washed his head"). Suspects Ollard overworked with his brother incapacitated.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)His action on cheques to Ollard. The stained glass windows arrived yesterday but no candlesticks. Fear they must have been sold at the Sale. What a nuisance! Thanks for congrats on anniversary of consecration, wishes someone else had had the honour.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)The £5 gift is for his outing - not not tell anyone else. Bishop wil also arrnage for the supply - but keep it "between ourselves". Spoken to Tonks and satisfied that the St Neots building is worth getting - limit is up to £500.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Relating to the March Presbytery and rental properties: Letters from Fr W Clare (7), Fr L Allen(7), Canon Tonks(1), GF Stokes(1), AP Peacock(1), Ollard(2); Postcard from Fr Clare; Bills/invoices (15) from Insurance Co., Utilities & Councils; Agreements for construction and rent; Rent Account (1910 & 1911); Inventory (1941 - Fr Mortimer J Hanagan); Inventory (1948 - Rev W J Gaffney); Fr Gerard Collins to Bishop (Parker) - his critical survey of Chatteris house (11-7-1953).
Allen, Louis Rev (-1931)Huntingdon Mission book record of endowments - according to a Fr Tonks report in 1920
UnknownFr Ketterer writes from Gt. Billing, Northamptonshire: The Studio had been difficult to let and when he informed the Bishop he was told to do what he could. He let to Mr Smith with no formal agreement (as supported by Mr King, Mr Pauling's agent) and sub-letting was not mentioned. He did not liking this way of doing things.
Ketterer, Constantine Rev (-1940)Ulcer gone but still unwell. Will take a week's holiday if he can find priest to take over. Fr Campbell of Bishop's Stortford upset he cannot find a priest to come.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)He has seen Mr Ollard & has gone through the Presbytery accounts with him. The enclosed account is correct. Architect's bill far from clear. Apologises for his mistake re total amount of bill. Statement proves he did not incur extra debt of £50 for stoves etc.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Mr F. Janion of Catholic Educational Cinema Co would buy whole Collingwood estate including house, picture palace, theatre & 5 shops. For £2000 Diocese would have house & land & part of shop property which would be endowment for Mission. He will examine property on Thursday.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Kimbolton belongs to Rushden parish - Fr Lockyer has asked several times if Fr Heptonstall could take it on - no, district is already far too large. Attack of 'flu with some pneumonia - 5 weeks illness took some getting over.
"Everything is very quiet here - no work & few people. I'm simply vegetating!"
Unfortunately his letter was too late for the Sisters in Wales. There are two properties both suitable for convent schools - one with 35 acres the other with 70 acres. Does Canon Tonks know of any communities on the look out for properties? Much better as the pleurisy attack was mild but still with him, not confined to bed.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Daily Mail has announced Canon Elwes is to be new Bishop - good to have our own man. he's a kind and just man, but be careful when he is liverish - you'll know because his hair gets untidy.
Anything from the Holy Ghost nuns? Need to contact them about Hailford House and grounds. Fr Purcell appreciates your kind words - he's a man who gets little encouragement and appreciates a kind word.
Problems in making a claim for a tax return - can Fr Tonks help?
Wish to take him to see the improvements at St Neots church.
No returns been made to tax inspector. Address for the Holy Ghost nuns? Would help to get the mission going if a convent were here. Canon Elwes appointment as bishop is good news. He played cello at some concerts here and has supplied for me. Pleurisy back - worried about having to travel 22 miles between masses.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Writing from The Catholic Presbytery, Ely, Cambs., Fr Ketterer says: "The Presbytery at St Ives was built by me in the Summer of 1906. I occupied it for nearly two years, leaving St Ives on my appointment to Gr. Billing in May 1908."
Ketterer, Constantine Rev (-1940)Writing from Great Billing, Fr Ketterer did not authorize the cookery room or the W.C. - did not know about them until months later. Similarly about the key and the sub-letting. He had intended to protest but in the hurry of his departure which was quite unexpected he completely forgot the matter.
Ketterer, Constantine Rev (-1940)Have spent over £40-0-0 on fixtures and fittings but not ready to provide an inventory as bills are awaited from tradesmen. £30 of which is mission property. Delighted with official announcement of Mrs Temple Layton's settlement - a welcome addition to income. Ramsey repairs continuing- - floor far worse than thought. Mission begins on Saturday - visiting every single house in Huntingdon [+4 places] looking for hidden Papists. "... great fun to see the stare and panic ... when I tell them I am a Catholic priest". Received with courtesy and politeness.
Lockyer, Frederick W Rev (-1954)Cannot understand Fr Tonks' letter - provide fuller particulars?
