Bishop writes to Fr Stephen Doupe saying that there is little money for a new Church at Papworth. Not having seen the existing chapel he makes assumptions and provides a lengthy set of suggestions regarding the design and restructuring of the chapel - somewhat similar to that at Walsingham which cost far less than £2000. Porch stays; WC converted with present pipe. Herewith a photo of Walsingham church. The Bishop will be in Cambridge for December 9 to 12th. The next Finance Board meeting is on 24th November perhaps Fr Doupe could provide descriptions or a scale drawing?
Pencilled notes regarding plot size and church size.

Page 1: Letter from Bishop referring to "last Sunday, November 14", when he celebrated Mass at the Chapel. He had spoken about the attached questionnaire regarding use of the Mass centre which needs an agreement from the congregation. Points raised: 1. No church will be built in Hemsby; 2. Offer of use of Anglican Church all year round; 3. Preserve own Chapel - as a fall back option - for community use.

Bishop Keating considers 20ft x 68 ft hut is adequate, and a bargain at £90. He will give the money to the Mission provided:

  1. site is free of restrictions,
  2. Fr Delaney approves and supports this
  3. Congregation guarantee to obtain the funds for everything else - removal, re-erection, fittings and furnishings.
Their zeal and generosity gave the Bishop great satisfaction.

Bishop advises that deeds for presbytery (Normanhurst plots 34 & 35?) are with Withams. As is the separate deed for church plot. Good idea to have a church hall, but, all costs, etc. must go through Finance Board, which meets on 26 February. Bishop is at the Convent in Ipswich and could deal with the matter himself if it is urgent. Does Fr Jolly know anything about Mrs Spencer of Thoringham, Saxmundham? May have lunch there and might meet Fr Jolly there too.

The draft provided by Asst. Principal Chaplain, RC, RAF Anthony Smith is used to thank the O/C Grp. Cpt. Morris about the arrangements for the Chaplaincy at RAF Honington. The use of RAF churches is a valuable facility for the scattered communities in East Anglia, together with the cooperation of the RAF Chaplains' Branch.

Upbeat and supportive letter from the Bishop. Fr Malone needs an extended rest, a couple of months or so at home, do not worry about any expense the Bishop will look after that. 9 years is a long spell at Huntingdon, longer than anyone except Fr Duffy who just vegetated, which cannot be said of Fr Malone. Go get a medical opinion - Bishop demands it. Changes are due in May. "Anyhow, banish as mere bunkum and the effect of the 'Flu' and the pessimisim that always accompanies it. The ways of congregations go like waves, up and down, and are quite as mysterious". The opening was a great success and the only cloud was the absence of Fr Malone.

Letter: Fr Malone should deal with SV Ekins as he sees fit regarding the sale of the plot for the old church. A delay may find a better price. Included is a "line to help you with your appeal"
Blessing: Blessing for Fr Malone to ultimately redeem the debt owing due to the purchase of the Church at St Neots. He is obliged, with the Bishops authority, to seek money form a wider public. The cost for converting the Baptist Chapel was met by the Guild of Our Lady of Ransom (some £500).

Day of Installation - an infant church - a "Year of Grace"; his homily said it all; groping for the right "shape" of the new diocese; a charge to "lead, to minister, to exercise compassion"; programme of pastoral visits - Archbishop Warlock's lead; responsibilites to the church i England and everywhere but chiefly to the European scene; despite that he will be available; pastoral oversight to be established [organisational aspects listed]; Canon McBride as Vicar-General, Canon Taylor as Chancellor; invites comments on his "model"; will remain at Poringland - chaplain to be appointed for the Cathedral; drafting a second Ad Clerum - to be crisp and to the point.
