Approach by Shanahans to be legally married in the eyes of the church following a registry office marriage on 26 January. They thought they were doing the right thing but now know it was not so. The urgency arises as the man, a US Army NCO, considers he may be recalled soon. They are first cousins. Fr Thompson has his doubts since he is aware of 3 false statements: 1 the registry office was actually in London, 2. the man is retired from the army, 3. the woman has lived for 12 years in Bungay and not recently in Ireland.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Cannot do anything till more enquiries are made about the couple. Three false statements to begin with is a bit tall!"

Undated letter. Apologies for delay in responding to a letter with enclosures of 20 October [1912?]: new fire-grate fitted but not ordered; new boarded floor - knows nothing about it; ball[?] rejected/cancelled the work when large iron frame made - ball still on the sacristy floor; ordered a new exterior lamp; ordered the gas main to be attached to existing services; only instructions to Marriot were about the colour of the walls. Queries the cost of other items - £8-13-0 cost of priest's order, £16-6-3 (plus £7-10-0) is Bateman & King's own cost done at their own authority. Complains that his views on the work were not sought and Canon Tonks has taken the workmen's words against his own. The work is required because the dilapidation is due to others before he set foot in the mission.

Cannot understand what is not clear in the estimate for work at Ramsey. Best if Fr Tonks visits and sees for himself. Will get King there too.
