The new prison of Littlehey is to have Fr Chirs Newman (Claretian) of Buckden as the chaplain. Asks Fr Howlin to write to sanction this approach as he thinks that Fr Howlin has done his "prison service"
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Just back from Peru. This legislation will probably be more strongly urged in near future - that non-Catholics may not approach Catholic altars for Holy Communion. The Bishop explains this further. On Confession his advice is to leave as is for now, until there might be a reiteration of more restrictive legislation from Rome. At which point you will have to tell the lady the this permission no longer obtains. The bishop says he ought to let Fr Kerby know that John Drury is grateful to the people of St Ives.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Thank you to Fr Mossey and Miss Cooper for the welcome and hospitality on Sunday. Obvious that he had to be at Buckden; but his own bug was developing fast and by the time he reached home he was not well and the doctor has confined him to the house for the next three days.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Will have to miss Benediction with the nuns - Bishop grant has an infection and asked Bishop Clark to cover a Sunday Confirmation at Buckden.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop has asked Peter Wilson to deal with the matter of reimbursing £1,000 to Miss Magoris. Suggests that the Parish might contribute more to the St John's fund. Thanks for the picture - "it was a good occasion."
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop appreciates Fr O'Toole's reports, especially his own. The resonse to "Twenty Years after the Second Council" has a remarkable convergence. Bishop asks Fr O'Toole to thank his parishioners for their "diligence and generosity in meeting to mull over the question".
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop Clark says Visitation programme is fine and he will do his best to follow it. Arrive on Saturday at 8pm. Bite to eat on offer?
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop happy to go to Sawston and commission Special Ministers. He will do so after his visitation to Our Lady of English Martyrs (OLEM) in Cambridge. Each candidate must have adequate catechesis, be in possession of the CTS blue handbook and have a certificate for the Bishop to issue.
Delighted to hear that the parish is geared to Saturday 16th May.
Multi-topic letter: Struck through are: Ransom monies; Wilson (Geoffrey); Schools Commission meeting
Oxmoor section: Decision to be made on Oxmoor - to make it semi-autonomous; Liam Crowley ready financially to go at it but it would be "near-to-bone"; need a way through "the tortuous paths of parish priest brinkmanship". Intend, when time is right, to join Whittlesey and Ramsey, and, St Michael's and the Good Shepherd (but present incumbent not on wavelength).
Fr Kerby may seem gruff & unsympathetic - he's not really like that - he possibly did not know how many places the Parish would be assigned. The Vicar General, Mgr. McBride is writing to priests about the selection process. Bishop urges her to add her name and that she won't be the only one with a partner who is not a Catholic.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop understand her frustration but will not comment on the details. Fr Kerby is a devoted priest but has his own ideas. Th Bishop will consider; he will not fail to discharge his responsibilities. "I ask you to continue your excellent and faithful catechetical ministry in spite of difficulties."
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Sorry comfort in the words of Our Lady to Bernadette .. "she did not have to convince the hierarchy, she just had to give them the message and stick by its authenticity." We cannot convince Fr Kerby that his concept of ministry is out of kilter: but we can go on telling him. Bishop refers to Fr John (Drury?) being told that he lacks steel; sure that he is now making up for it in Talara. But is the congregation at St Ives too complacent? Bishop irritated that John Gardner is under employed.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Apologies for slow reply. Not the only one to write about Fr Kerby and the change of "style" at St Ives. Fr Kerby is dedicated to his priestly vocation, whatever style reservations there may be. He needs to be "discovered" and knows his Bishop does not go along with is more idiosyncratic approaches. You are not an outsider, we are all one family despite our divisions.

O'Toole, Laurence RevRequest for Baptismal Certificate relating to an A L Strama born and baptised in St Neots
Smith, John RevLetter: signed by Bishop Cuthbert (chairman of the Universities Board); maintenance of Chaplains or Lecturers of service to Catholic students at Oxford and Cambridge. Appeal for funds to meet £700-800 expense of the two chaplaincies.
Instructions: "Instructions to the Parents, Superiors & Directors of Catholic Laymen who desire to study in the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge" signed by Cardinal Vaughan and all the Bishops of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
An obligation to say weekly Mass at Ramsey could be reduced to quarterly, in meantime, could offer intention at March instead. What was the value & make of Fr Dunleavy's car which Diocese sent £52 for? Priest can take £1 per week from rents due from cottages. Amendment to wording of faculty (Matriomonia valide assistendi in missione sen districtum cui addictus es"). Other men as regarded as curates. Sent copy of response to congregation's appeal to keep Fr Dunleavy - what is their state now?
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Bishop responding to parishioners' letter asking for removal of Fr Dunleavy from the parish. Not a permanent appointment and the appointment of the Montfort Religious Fathers' Fr Lydiate is now arranged. He hopes parishioners will take Fr Lydiate into their affection. Unwell, the Bishop cannot yet visit the parish to give thanks to Fr Dunleavy & welcome Fr Lydiate. The house will now be put to better use with three priests staying there.
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Notes of a telephone conversation about Hugh Byron's Building Project.
Wilson very concerned that things must be done properly using an architect and master builder. Should not be a "botch job". Fr Byron has to be persuaded to not object to paying proper fees for work done. NB planning permission might be required. Wilson quite critical and unimpressed with Fr Byron's projected house alterations. Yes, do school. Wilson suggests Fr Drury see Fr Byron and discuss the proposals. Need a known, architect e.f. Julian Limitani. Also Wilson considers getting an 85% grant to improve St MAr's school building is "just not on".
