Writing from The Catholic Presbytery, Ely, Cambs., Fr Ketterer says: "The Presbytery at St Ives was built by me in the Summer of 1906. I occupied it for nearly two years, leaving St Ives on my appointment to Gr. Billing in May 1908."
Ketterer, Constantine Rev (-1940)Fr Ketterer has tenders the bids as advised by Canon Tonks and may yet meet the trustees of the land. As they meet rarely it could be some months' wait.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Unable to meet the bills for the last quarter. Supporting statement provided. His economy will not help if the congregation cannot do more. Comparing his situation with that of Fr Phillips in the account book, he notes that their expenses are about the same. Hating to admit failure he has to write hoping Canon Tonks will make his "failure - a victory!"
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Fr Ketterer thanks Monsignor (Canon Tonks?) for advising of the purchase of "The "Elms". Will make contact later about going there.
The letter is also a covering note for his last quarter's accounts of which the car seems to "lap up money", although he rarely travels outside of his district.
Writes to Monsignor (assumed to be Canon Tonks): Receipt for Bishop's generous gift to the Mission enclosed. Post Office has acquired the piece of meadow, rendering the site too narrow for Church & Presbytery. Describes the nature of planned expansion in Wymondham. Has identified a site 10 minutes walk from current address. Has obtained pews & chairs for the two churches in Wymondham and Dereham. Increased seating accommodation, more dignified and silent when congregation sit or stand.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Writes to Monsignor (assumed to be Canon Tonks): Has "move in" but still to get order out of chaos. Painters to finish on Wednesday. Needs estimates from Canon to check on the work being done. Furnishing achieved and is fairly comfortable. Asks for advance of £40 to pay the painter who is doing a good job.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Writes to Monsignor (assumed to be Canon Tonks): Estimates for work already done. Describes additional work and work in wake (chimney and guttering made good and watertight). Additional charge of £9 for the greenhouse; painter done an extra small room and other work for free.
Estimate 1 dated 22-4-1938 from F Standley for rewiring of The Elms
Estimate 2 dated 21-4-1938 from FC Forkes for painting , papering and renovations
Writing from Great Billing, Fr Ketterer did not authorize the cookery room or the W.C. - did not know about them until months later. Similarly about the key and the sub-letting. He had intended to protest but in the hurry of his departure which was quite unexpected he completely forgot the matter.
Ketterer, Constantine Rev (-1940)Have spent over £40-0-0 on fixtures and fittings but not ready to provide an inventory as bills are awaited from tradesmen. £30 of which is mission property. Delighted with official announcement of Mrs Temple Layton's settlement - a welcome addition to income. Ramsey repairs continuing- - floor far worse than thought. Mission begins on Saturday - visiting every single house in Huntingdon [+4 places] looking for hidden Papists. "... great fun to see the stare and panic ... when I tell them I am a Catholic priest". Received with courtesy and politeness.
Lockyer, Frederick W Rev (-1954)Cannot understand Fr Tonks' letter - provide fuller particulars?
Lockyer, Frederick W Rev (-1954)An unhappy letter regarding finances for the mission. Bishop had told him that the mission income would amount to £84 per annum, comprising:
- Ramsey endowment £30
- Kingcliffe endowment £14
- Poor Mission Fund £20
- Miss Layton / Bishop £20
Masses said for Kingcliffe are not * as promised but 61 per year! Also another 33 masses as a promise of the Bishop. Now after 6 months he is £10 short. The bi-weekly journeys to Ramsey consumes the whole of the £30, the collections fall far short of covering costs.
"I cannot pay my way& keep two parishes 1 1miles apart going.". The new £20 Temple Layton endowment may help so long as there are no obligations attached.
Undated letter. Apologies for delay in responding to a letter with enclosures of 20 October [1912?]: new fire-grate fitted but not ordered; new boarded floor - knows nothing about it; ball[?] rejected/cancelled the work when large iron frame made - ball still on the sacristy floor; ordered a new exterior lamp; ordered the gas main to be attached to existing services; only instructions to Marriot were about the colour of the walls. Queries the cost of other items - £8-13-0 cost of priest's order, £16-6-3 (plus £7-10-0) is Bateman & King's own cost done at their own authority. Complains that his views on the work were not sought and Canon Tonks has taken the workmen's words against his own. The work is required because the dilapidation is due to others before he set foot in the mission.
Lockyer, Frederick W Rev (-1954)Cannot understand what is not clear in the estimate for work at Ramsey. Best if Fr Tonks visits and sees for himself. Will get King there too.
Lockyer, Frederick W Rev (-1954)Fr Lockyer sending on the receipt but noting that there are no terms for repayment - "one can do no more than hope"
Lockyer, Frederick W Rev (-1954)Postcard form from Postmaster - missing letter from Bishop not found. Canon Tonks written to say Fr Malone has been overpaid, this resulted in having little left for October.

Canon Tonks has advised Fr Malone that Mrs Temple Layton has paid the £50 debt to the diocese loaned for repairs to Huntingdon and St Neots. He knows his flock are unable to support such debt as a lot have been unemployed with the Coal strikes and the closure of Windovers [coach and carriage makers].
Malone, John F Rev (-1970)Auctioneer has confirmed that the property at St Neots has been bought (£450 for building; £50 for benches, pulpit, etc.) on the day before Fr Malones departure [on a trip]. Passing contract on to Canon Tonks.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Field up for re-rental and will bring in £8 per year. However, fences in very poor state and has spoken with Canon Tonks about funding their replacement - otherwise the renter will not sign. Many Happy Returns for tomorrow.

Discussing the nature of the debt at St Neots when land was sold to Mr Brittain. Mr Ekins has no offer for £290, but has Fr Malone's authority to sell at £2 per foot of frontage if he cannot get more .
Malone, John F Rev (-1970)Acknowledges the Canon Tonks' advice "Neither a borrower nor lender be" and the truth of it.
