Having been asked to preach at the Chaplaincy in UEA (University of East Anglia) on 28 October 1979, asks if he could stay overnight at the White House.
Also notes that his statement in the Times has stirred up a hornets' nest. "... Archbishop of Cardiff saying he agreed with every word of my statement; makes me feel I must have been gravely mistaken!"
Manuscript note that he'd be happy if Bishop Clark said no as he does not wish to impose.
Headed: "Holmes", an undated note from the previously arranged meeting held in Norwich with Bishop Cary-Elwes.
Man is a convert from Wesleyanism; Woman is Irish, once a school teacher in Ireland; Girl aged 9.
They had previously dealt with Canon Eeles. Have not sent their child to the catholic elementary school after she attended Mrs Ridsdale's school in King's Lynn. Being "flagrant" Fr Stokes is refusing them sacraments. They threatened to go to Prot. church instead. They cite other cases where catholic children are not being sent to the catholic school. The real reason for the meeting is they have the impression that this will affect whether the boy will gain a scholarship to the High School.
Bishop advised that the boy can still gain a scholarship from the [catholic?] school; Bishop queries whether the parents will be satisfied.
Final paragraph: "Holmes was secretary of school, his wife was a nuisance to all, and he had [?] [?] he has been forgiven..." "...Case of revenge".

Welcome to stay for the event in the UEA (University of East Anglia) on 28 October 1979. Preparing for an ARCIC meeting in Venice. "Dick" [Stewart] is going to SPUC in the New Year - Dennis Corbishley has considerable practice in the ecumenical circuit.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Suggested arrangements for the Cardinal to attend in Norwich for a Great High mass at St John the Baptist Cathedral.
Also mentions Christopher Jenkins (Chaplain at Fisher House, Cambridge) whose article criticising the major schools that their products arrived, mostly lapsed, caused a furore; reactions were: Ealing Furious, Ampleforth defensively pompous, Downside jocose and philosophical, Worth & Belmont very concerned.
The Walsingham Banner, commissioned and executed 3 years ago, is missing. Bishop issues a 3 line whip to find it. Could only be in Walsingham or St John the Baptist Cathedral.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Form letter from Bishop Clark - anticipating celebration of Christmas; 6 months "on the road"; 1977 bringing changes; St John's, a massive burden and cost, needs £250,000; need for more priests.
manuscript annotation: "I admire your pastoral zeal and energy at Lynn - and thank you greatly for what you do. It must be somewhat frustrating not to get any go-ahead for planned developments, etc. However, I sense that all flourishes under your guidance. All blessings, Yours devotedly +Alan".
Wants to re-direct the Sunday Liturgy in to the right channel. Clive may have mentioned that the Diocesan Liturgy Commission would be involved in the three major pilgrimages: East Anglia Diocesan, the Sick and the National. The decisions remain with Fr Allen but they are an "ex natura" advisory group. Bishop says he has suffered misery over the music. He prefers responsorial with the congregation involved as far as possible. (so resist attempts by all small choirs trying to muscle in). Fr Walsh can help with the music. There are other points but they can wait. Fr Tony Rogers is the Chair of the Diocesan Liturgy Commission and PP at St George's Norwich. Fr Gary Dowsey is my secretary.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Abortive work costs have to be paid.
Appeal should have a personalised approach by the Bishop - not done - but water under the bridge. The Cathedral is renewing its boilers, etc therefore less of a donation from that parish. Refers to his Ad Clerum in which he states that whilst a generous benefaction underwrites a third of the costs, any approach by Mr Ward should be welcomed.
The pope's visit - go sensitively, unlikely that he will visit Walsingham, so the success of the Appeal should not rest on this alone.

Bishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] dleighetd to hear the handover went so well. Church of England clergy heartened by Bishop Grant's demonstration of ecumenical intention. Hope that there will no be any legal problems.
CorrespondentBishop of Norwich [Lancelot Fleming] writing about problems associated with the Bishop of Northampton taking on responsibility for Red Mount Chapel. 1. is it in King's Lynn Borough's power to effect this handover? 2. Whilst happy for planned ecumenical use, shoudl it be handed over to KL's Council of Churches? Composition of committee of management. Waiting for a reply from Bishop Grant. He hopes these can be resolved easily.
