Personal Loan from the Finance Board; will increase insurance policy from £75 to £100; Canon Tonks to fill in the form and send to Century Insurance in Ipswich. Not at all well. Lady Winefride has invited him to stay - so he will go one Sunday in Lent. Can the Poor Mission Fund do something for Hunstanton. "I have had a rotten time & am likely to while the war lasts & even afterwards for a time while people recover the strain on their resources."

Sending Canon Tonks the premium for the policy. Going on retreat at St Edmunds given by Fr Hugh Pope OP, Prior of Woodchester, a nice man I am told. "... retreats, usually depress me & do me no good I fancy...". Fr Cameron is here and it's a good opportunity as Old Hall is nearer and less expensive than further afield. "Fr Parker must have had a bad smash as I hear he can't say Mass yet."

Mgr Freeland says estimates for work at Hunstanton was sent on to the Finance Board. Not hearing anything, but needing to get the work done before the estimate is revised he has had painting done, a new oven, a new copper and received a rates demand recently. If the Board can relieve him of the debt, £29, it would help.

Bell has fallen through the roof and caused significant damage. Have told the original church builders, Messrs Shanks, to repair the damage. Cannot pay for the repairs - hope the Finance Board will. As Fr Flynn took the parish books have no idea who made the bell - please advise so Shanks send it away. Collections not good; visitors have very little money - last Sunday 6 farthings in the plate. However, an appeal at 2 collections received £6-1-9.

Quotes Canon Tonks' letter "there is a much larger application being made for repairs at Sudbury". Cannot understand this as he explains with examples of his efforts to ensure the Sudbury buildings were properly maintained - within his own finances. But, "It is a wretchedly rotten old converted cottage." Not happy at being sent to an unsupported mission for the 3rd time - never again!... I'm feeling very fed up..." [further page(s) not present]

Kimbolton belongs to Rushden parish - Fr Lockyer has asked several times if Fr Heptonstall could take it on - no, district is already far too large. Attack of 'flu with some pneumonia - 5 weeks illness took some getting over.
"Everything is very quiet here - no work & few people. I'm simply vegetating!"

Unfortunately his letter was too late for the Sisters in Wales. There are two properties both suitable for convent schools - one with 35 acres the other with 70 acres. Does Canon Tonks know of any communities on the look out for properties? Much better as the pleurisy attack was mild but still with him, not confined to bed.

Daily Mail has announced Canon Elwes is to be new Bishop - good to have our own man. he's a kind and just man, but be careful when he is liverish - you'll know because his hair gets untidy.
Anything from the Holy Ghost nuns? Need to contact them about Hailford House and grounds. Fr Purcell appreciates your kind words - he's a man who gets little encouragement and appreciates a kind word.
Problems in making a claim for a tax return - can Fr Tonks help?
Wish to take him to see the improvements at St Neots church.

No returns been made to tax inspector. Address for the Holy Ghost nuns? Would help to get the mission going if a convent were here. Canon Elwes appointment as bishop is good news. He played cello at some concerts here and has supplied for me. Pleurisy back - worried about having to travel 22 miles between masses.

The financial state of the Mission is such that it may not be meeting its bills by the end of this quarter. Fr Ketterer provides estimates for repairs: chimney re-pointing, making roof watertight. He asks to send a statement at the end of the month to demonstrate his care.

No decision on the land this week. Currently Post Office has bid for nearly half of the land and the feeling is that people want a new Post Office. Fr Phillips' bid has been dropped without checking that an increased bid would be made. But £700 might be enough to secure the entire site. Asks should he bid the full amount, and, would half the site be enough? This is too good to miss being right in the middle of town. Includes a plan of the land between Middleton Street and Back Lane - identifies a Fives Court in top NE corner.
