Commenting on the "heresy" to be found in a course advertised in the weekly new sheet from Our Lady and the English Martyrs in Cambridge. It was run by the Diocesan education Department. The writer quotes from the course, course material and a book he bought subsequently. Considers "Informed Criticism" will demolish all belief - "surely we must have some form of indoctrination?"

He and Coelfrid enjoyed the meal and meeting Basil Hume.Mentions the Bishop's forthcoming operation; hopes the appeal will get a response in Beccles but spending nearly £6,000 on our own roof may work against it.
Watkin, Aelred Rev MA FSA FRSA FRHistS (1918-1997)The Meryemana appeal for an ecumenical centre and restoration of a shrine is a project which Dr Heley considers would benefit form the patronage of Cardinal Hume.
Heley, Margaret Mary (Maire) Dr (1930-2020)Suggesting that the National Pilgrimage be renamed the "Cardinal's Pilgrimage". Provides an argument for this being a development form the Cardinal's own pilgrimages to Walsingham and reserving the name National Pilgrimage for events which need to represent the Church in England. Also, there is the suggestion from a recent meeting of Shrine Directors of the need for the re-evangelisation of Europe, which a National Pilgrimage would help deliver.
Allen, Peter Rev SM BA MThBefore the Bishop goes to Rome, two questions:
- Asking for written approval (for the archives) to confirm a verbal authority to hold the ceremony for the Anointing of the Sick during pilgrimage masses
- Bishop of East Anglia has authority from the Conference of Bishops to make an appeal - has anything been done?
manuscript p.s.: "P.S. My replies from the Cardinal made no reference to the Press Conference..."
Lt Col Philp provided £1,000 to the Development Fund in memory of the Bishop being appointed Prior of the eastern Section of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
manuscript ps: "I have written to the Cardinal and asked him officially to be chief patron of the Appeal, along with the Duke of Norfolk."
Br John Hawkes SFO, permanent deacon of the archdiocese of Westminster, is to be employed by the Shrine as Bursar from 1 April 1981. Will be on permanent loan to RCDEA with permission of the Cardinal
Birch, Clive Rev SM LGSMThe Chapel of Our Lady of Reconciliation will not be completed on 6 September, but by the end of September. Asking the Cardinal to bless the chapel and return in the Spring for its official dedication. Some ten Bishops will attend the National Pilgrimage - a suitable occasion to announce the chapel's near completion.
Birch, Clive Rev SM LGSMRequest from Jonathan Salt to establish a branch of the Guild of St Stephen at St Peter and All Souls, Peterborough. First branch for both sexes in the Diocese. Rules of the Archconfraternity require that the Diocesan Bishop makes the request in writing to the Cardinal. The National Director (in Wembley) will arrange for the parchment to be written for the Cardinal's signature and approval.
Healy, Richard RevFr Harry Wace has requested the establishment of the Guild of St Stephen in the parish of the Sacred Heart, East Dereham. "Dick" [Fr Richard Healey] (Parish of St Oswald, King and Martyr, Peterborough) asks "Paul" [Paul Maddison, Bishop's Secretary] to arrange for a letter to be signed by the Bishop and sent to Anthony Hawes KSG at the Archconfraternity of St Stephen. Includes a draft for the letter to the Cardinal.
Manuscript annotation to insert "Your Eminence" and "EKW / S" [every kind wish]
Fr Maddision writes to Deacon Alan Middup. The Augustinian withdrawal from Yarmouth and the Ecumenical dimension are recognised by the Bishop and whoever is appointed will continue to build and strengthen these links. Quotes Cardinal Hume - we have moved from co-operation to commitment.
Maddison, Paul RevInviting "Your Eminence" [Cardinal Hume] to King's Lynn to celebrate the leasing of the Red Chapel to Bishop of Northampton [Grant]. to be the first Cardinal to set foot inside the chapel. Some history about the chapel. Service not finalised; request suggestions for ecumenical dignatories to be invited.
Wace, Harry Montague Anthony Rev (1926-2002)In a letter to Cardinal Hume, Mr Kinnock said he regretted his remarks. Catholic Bishops had told him that his remarks at a Labour rally in Birmingham had deeply offended thousands of his own supporters.
