Heard Mrs Bowles's story - husband returned to native village of Southoe hoping for a job - turned down 30/- per week as a stockman as he thinks it should be 37/-. No signs of extreme poverty - gave her something to go on with. Will keep an eye on her. Baptise the youngest child tomorrow.
manuscript annotation: "Well done. Keep an ac and I will repay you as they cannot do it alone. Be my almoner if the approve of it. Apr 6/27"

Not sure that Fr Flynn believes Fr Malone did not act to frustrate his plans for the cottage. Mrs Gregory was a "pin-pricker" and Fr Malone has learnt patience in dealing with such. Whilst health is better he has a constant feeling of impending doom and is getting waspish as a consequence. Letter from Ekins [not present] prompts a request for bishop to express confidence in Fr Malone collecting money for St Neots.

Writing from 14 Bishops Mansions, Bishops Park, London SW6.
Thanks the bishop for his beautiful letter. His brother is critically ill but having had the operation and survived for so long the doctors believe he will pull through. Cannot believe that the Provost is dead having looked after him for so long - at least one wish was granted, that he die on a Saturday. Grieved to learn the Bishop is on the sick list.

Informing the Bishop that the Provost has been seen by two doctors who have slightly different prognoses for his prostate trouble -one saying it is benign the other cancerous. The VG [Vicar General] (Mgr Freeland) visited and advised the Last Sacraments for the Provost. Fr Malone did this whilst the Provost said he was not dying but now had his "ticket"!
Also hopes the bishop is making progress and will recover soon.

Unable to see you after the Cathedral service as had a bilious attack, had to lie down, and returned to Huntingdon. Appreciate the bishop's generous offer but not convinced that she should be separated out from the others in the parish. Even so not satisfied that she is deserving - as they say in Ireland - she is given to making a "poor mouth" and is trading on her being a catholic and married to a protestant.

Thanking the Bishop for his support. Fr Malone is very dispirited and explains to the Bishop that he is not achieving what he'd like to be doing the parish and at St Neots. He is very sorry for himself and thinks that being unable to attend on Wednesday [the Bishop's opening ceremony] is a punishment from the Almighty - "All through the week, 'Punishment - punishment - punishment' has been ringing in my ears."

Fr Malone has seen the doctor - opinion that a change was advisable but not essential. Fr Malone lists reasons why it would be difficult for a supply to take over. Also he considers that he could be seen as "crocking every few months" and at the Bishop's expense. Will take a few days off. Happy to go wherever the Bishop decides to send him - or to stay where he is. Encloses [not present] cuttings and photographs of the church opening.

£100 cheque towards debt enclosed. Appeal not going well - have sent out "thousands of letters" with little result. Ireland is a disappointing failure. Ascribes the problem to "Sweepstake Fever" leaving people with little money. Considers a malign influence is being exerted on St Neots. Admits he is not up to an Evening Service and has not been preaching on Sunday evenings. He is concious of an apathy amonsgt the people; hence his earlier views are not entirely due to "darkened spectacles".
