Plans for leave near Marseilles and arrangements for supply conflict with news of a Synod. Sisters are anxious to resolve the placement of the chapel - the room for the chapel was the library, the bedroom overhead will be a class room, the bath overhead at the altar end will be removed. The Holmes affair is settled and the child entered for the Convent at reduced rates - no ill will shown by the parents. However, there is a boycott of the convent in place by the congregation. Staffing for when the sisters take over the school.

Card from Leicester to confirm supply arrangements. Discussion about the progress of "Young Farr" a boy currently at Glossop and doing very well. He is to be offered an additional year for Higher Studies which will be a bridge to Seminary. Reminds the bishop of his promise to attend the pilgrimage and preach - "I am trying as far as possible, while the older generation are alive in this parish, to get preachers for the pilgrimage who knew the Shrine in its earliest days. A little ancient history too from Authority might help to disillusion our rivals at Sudbury, Middlesex."

Seems very quiet after Norwich. Visiting people, undertaking a census, catechism at the school. No changing anything - even as suggestions come in. Long and interesting talk with Fr Page one evening.
manuscript annotation: "Answered: Just Carry on! Do you find proximity to Wisbech & Glen[?] in any way Embarrassing or annoying. June 30/26"

Now understands the silence from Norwich. Thanks the bishop for offering to come to Lynn, but would prefer to meet the Bishop elsewhere within easy reach. Considering starting a Guild of the Blessed Sacrament, also to do Exposition on each first Friday. House needs some work doing on it - the wall around the church is to be repaired.
manuscript annotation: "Ans: Gave him advice as to keeping away from Norwich unless invited! Think will run Expositions. Would people be able to come and watch n a week day? How about Sunday? Try now and again with permission, and see the result. Certainly start Guild of Blessed Sacrament. Look after your school. Keep in with Fr Filmer of the Guild of O.L. of Ransom. Diocese cannot help you at the present. Eeles left little, oh very little, to the Diocese, in will. Get Page to tell you what this is. I wd. let you have it for the house. Nov 23/26"

Met with his mother and she has no intention of standing in his way - she absolves him of his undertaking with her. Spoke to Fr Page on the matter. However, torn between duty as a priest and that of a son. Would like to go back to Norwich to continue his work. Has a fear of bing buried in a small place with little to do.

Mr Langmaid who was received into the church in Tasmania three years ago wishes to be confirmed. He is currently a travelling salesman for a publishing firm. Happy to go anywhere (Ely, Cambridge, etc.) for the ceremony. There are others in the parish which could be confirmed, at the bishop's convenience.

Writing on Catholic Rectory, King's Lynn paper.
"What you tell me about Norwich does not surprise me, & I am at any rate to be out of suspense."
"I had intended to confide in your Lordship a year ago at Norwich, but in entering the room inferred (wrongly as I afterwards found out) that nothing had been said, & resolved on my side to play the game, so said nothing. But knowing the Vicar as I do now, I can quite see his point of view, & rejoice that the last 12 months has been free from friction".

The recent pastoral letter about the priest being a catechist is causing Fr Stokes concerns. He has asked the sisters to take two catechism classes for him. It has been working well with good results. This parish, being smaller than, say, Norwich has not the resources to undertake the role of catechist as the bishop has ruled.
Fr Page, despite being well supported by Fr Allen and Fr Rudderham, is not holding it together.

Has decided to proceed with the provisional Mission for September to be run by Fr Francis Gordon CSSR. What to pay him? He says" some give £5, some more some less." Mr Archer has approach with the request to remove his two children from the school and send them to local protestant school. He can afford to send them to the convents in Norwich or Swaffham. Other families seem to be watching for the decision in this. Cannot afford to lose from the 25 children at the school. Hopes to go on a retreat after September; illness in the parish has prevented him attending one so far.
manuscript annotation: "Ansd. 1. Facilities granted to Fr Gordon. 2. Cannot allow Mr Archer, who can afford to send his children to Norwich N. Dame, to send them to a Prot. School. 3. [?] indulgence & veneration or old prayer, 50 days, when visited after Rosary before the Shrine of O.L. of Walsingham, K. Lynn. Once a day. Aug 5/27"

The removal of children from the Catholic Elementary school to Mrs Ridsdale's school is undermining the position of the former. Fr Stokes feels that a stand should be made to support the Catholic school. He thinks there are poorer people who are waiting to see whether a well-to-do person, such as Mr Archer, is able to get their own way on such matters.
