Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster has announced a Synod for next July. Pope approved placing the diocese under the patronage of St Thomas of Canterbury (letters in Latin support this).

"The paucity of our numbers, and the diminished and diminishing means of the few among us who formerly rendered us assistance, make it prudent and necessary in me to give up the idea of founding new missions, or undertaking the erection of large chapels." - ecclesiastical students expenses
- expense of maintaining an agent in Rome
- debt incurred personally to meet the non-payment for 3 years of the pensions due to 4 missions.
He does this to demonstrate there is reason behind requests / appeals to the charity of congregations.

Obviously this letter could not be cast as a pastoral letter, he asks the priests to use their best efforts in the appeal.

Appeal for Diocesan Funds. Notes that contributions of Messrs Cuddon Brothers [£75/5/0] and E Trafford Esq [£100/0/0] together are half of the overall collections for the parishes. This helped considerably and meant no second collection was required.

Pg2-3: Edward Badeley's advice as a counsel to the Catholic Church on the requirements of the new Act {Places of Worship Registration Act 1855], recommending that churches and chapels be registered as required otherwise they may not be able to continue as places of worship.
The trial [G Achilli v Dr John Henry Newman, 1852] expenses are upwards of £7,500 of which £2,000 have been promised. This is an appeal for donations towards these costs.

Forms as prescribed by the New Ritual are to be used for registering baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths. Mixed marriages - handling them and ensuring the promises are obtained with regard to children.

The Jubilee year delayed by the exile of the Pope from his throne and see, is the current year. Lays out the good works required to benefit from the Jubilee. Also details the prayers required including the Litany of Our Lady of Loretto.

Announcing the restoration to England of her Catholic Hierarchy and thence the creation of the Diocese of Northampton. refers to the present "outbreak of indignant feeling" ... "something a little short of insanity". Asks what danger the Catholics present to the Crown and country. The Holy See having take care to avoid infraction of the law and give no umbrage to the British Government.

There is only one appeal in a year for Diocesan Funds. Expenses accrue from the discharge of episcopal duties such as meetings of the clergy and canons of the Diocesan Chapter.
