Part of St Michael the Archangel Parish, Huntingdon

A brave decision. Being "go ahead" needs to be supported by written documentation, spoken agreements are fragile! Even Parish priests in situ can make misjudgements. Has some sorrow over Oxmoor history, a brave decision to set it up; but it became fouled up and you are probably right to close it down. Has passed the letter onto Mark Little.

Compliments slip: Bishop Secretary: "Tony Sketch will arrange to deliver the enclosed - less the carbon - to all Downham Market parishioners when he distributes his invitations to the real Mass."
Page 1: letter to the congregation at Downham Market - explaining, now that the legal procedure is over, the sorrow he feels in acting against Fr Baker. Obedience to the Holy Father means accepting the changes away from the Tridentine Mass. Expects support for Fr Sketch. Notes of explanation included.

Many cards from Downside boys and staff. Seeing Fr Rogers frequently may help him - he is a good man. The church committee is mandated not to get into debt and all church improvements are paid for by benefactors - not church funds. Deanery minutes were just pointing out the danger of extraordinary ministers becoming ordinary ones. Mention of other parish oddities: one not having had confessions since last Easter; another replaced the Gospel with children reading out their compositions; another reading out snippets from the pastoral letter.

Part of Walsingham Shrine

Having received a call from Fr Pat Brown in response to his letter to the Cardinal regarding the September pilgrimage. The Cardinal is not happy with calling it the "Cardinal's Pilgrimage" he thinks it should be more Marian related. Fr Allen puts forward suggestions and asks can we use the Dowry of Mary tradition - "The Dowry Pilgrimage"?
Serious thought required before the decision is taken on the role of the Walsingham Trust (Trustees being Michael Ward, the Bishop and Fr Allen). Separation of finances from the Diocese (which Matt Duffin did not like) needs to be clearer since some leave money, etc. to the Shrine but NOT to the Diocese. In essence it matters little since the Bishop of East Anglia is in charge, but to consider the Shrine as a Parish?

Signing himself as Frank Arthur SDS, he knows that Fr Richmond is not continuing at Massingham but the Bishop's mention of rumours of Fr Arthur going there have caused him to think that he might like to do so. His health is not good but Burnham Market is not heavy work.

Income in the parish has increased - so, not living on a "pittance". Willing to accept position as a curate so that the parish priest from Swaffham does not have to travel to Downham. His weekly visit to the convent in Swaffham means he could easily report to the PP. Changes would be detrimental to this parish. Suggest that any priest free to officiate do so at Oxburgh instead. Not impelled to move; willing to stay.

In the absence of Fr Graystone, the Vicar Provincial, Father Michael O'Neill, asked that Fr Birch approach the Bishop for appointment as Parish Priest pro temp.
Since Fr John Murphy died there is a need to appoint another signatory (Fr Birch) for the Parish (Walsingham and Wells) Bank Account.
manuscript annotation: "(1) Appointment verbally given - 'temporary' (vicarius economus). (2) Requested three signatories for Bank Account."

Has made the decision to close the Good Shepherd Hall. Deferments by the Finance committee does not help especially when the lack of heating in the hall for the coming Winter is considered. Discussed it with the parishioners attending there. They were in agreement. New arrangements have met with support. Feels that he is now able to support Oxmoor estate more effectively - indeed, results are now showing.

Glad to have been sent to Huntingdon. The fly in the ointment is Good Shepherd Hall. Presents a number of issues associated with the Hall - its need for repairs, its use within the parish, perhaps over capacity for the parish, ability to care for the people of Oxmoor estate, money spent there could be better spent elsewhere. hence after speaking to Mgr Dick Wilson and Mgr Tony Philpot plus two parish meetings he asks for permission to close the hall. Mark Little and Mgr Wilson can provide financial information.

Part of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Parish, Wymondham

Fr Chapman provided figured to the Vicar-General earlier in the week. Fr Chapman wishes to be relieved of Watton because his health is not robust, finding Sunday mornings an effort and is pretty exhausted at the end. Losing Watton will make a difference because in 1977 it provided £800 and for 1978 it will be more than £900. Fr Chapman is concerned that his expenditure at Wymondham parish exceeds income. Much has been done to the house, cottage and hall and now the Church needs a new rook - £4,050 + VAT. He can manage without Watton and will have to ask Wymondham and Hethersett parishioners to be more generous 0 he thinks they could be.

Congratulates Bishop Clark on his appointment.
75th Anniversary of the opening of the parish and 100th anniversary of the parish. Fr p Duffy (sic) [Duff] came to live here in February 1876. Inviting the bishop to be a celebrant at the mass. Church was built by the generous Mr C Temple Layton. Large hole under 12th station of the cross is planned to be filled with a commemorative plaque.

Met Fr Richmond, Fr Murphy & Canon Mossey - all agree boundaries would take Burnham Thorpe, North Creake and South Creake from Well; and, Brancaster, Docking and Stanhoe from Hunstanton - about 36 - 40 square miles. Fr Richmond thinks the parish is financially comfortable (I think he lives a very spartan existence). Fr Hammond did a Dean's report in 1974 and found the property to be in good shape.

Informing the Bishop that it is time for Fr Richmond to move after 18 years at Burnham Market (17 at USAF Sculthorpe). Last year at a retreat in Massingham Convent he saw the sisters did not have a resident chaplain. He'd like to do this next.
His replacement is Fr Victor [sic] Arthur SDS
