Covering letter for a more detailed memo and photocopies of Halsbury Laws 4th Edition 1080 of Vol 14.
Head, Adrian Herbert Judge (rtd) (1923-2012)Churchwarden & Rector would prefer an outright free gift of the church. However, Church Commissioners prefer a full repairing lease with a peppercorn rent - their general policy. Is this acceptable?
Blackburne, Hugh Rev (1912-1995)Comments very helpful. Next time must avoid delays; make firm decisions to avoid costs rising all the time. Might be a good situation for a church sharing scheme - however have not mentioned this to Fr Richmond nor Rev Isaacson - doubt that they'd want to start over again.
Blackburne, Hugh Rev (1912-1995)Share the sadness that these negotiations have fallen through, but can understand why. Can Bishop Clark comment on whether he'd have taken a different view if things had been different? The transfer of St Mary's in Thetford is going ahead satisfactorily on the basis of a lease.
manuscript ps: hoped Bishop Clark had a happy time at Ely Cathedral for the ecumenical service.
13 May in the Paddington area to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of opening of the Anglican Shrine at Walsingham. This is a week after the synod vote on Anglican/Methodist reunion. There may be a protest against this scheme there. Rather delicate position for the RCs as we cannot be seen publicly associating with opposition to the scheme.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Not keen on paying for the church, or even renting it. The original proposition was affordable if taken steadily. If the Church Commissioner's remain steadfast then we may think of an extension to St Henry's.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Thank you for your letter. Had not realised the celebration may be used as a protest about the Synod vote for Anglican/Methodist reunion. Will arrange an ordination to attend.
Guazzelli, Victor Rev (1945-2004)Covering letter for the final (embargoed) copy of the address to be given to the General Synod on 1 February 1978.
Copies gone to all Bishops. The help provided by Bishop Clark and Dick [Stewart] has been the making of it.
Sorry about Bishop Clark's anxieties for his father.
Pg 1: Cardinal's draft address to the General Synod - requesting review/comments by Bishop Clark, Canon Stewart, Fr Keldany and Mgr George Leonard. 5 points for them to consider - asking for rewrite where necessary. Time is short.
initialled "GBH"; no date
Pg 2-11: draft address
"The Vatican has granted permission for another former Anglican clergyman, a married man, to be ordained priest in the Roman Catholic Church." Mr. John Heley was CofE vicar at St Edmund's Hunstanton.
Permission had also been given for two other former Anglican ministers earlier in the year.
Requests for saying Anglican mass at the Shrine are received from time to time. The Vicar of St Martin's was told the Bishop would be contacted. Fr Allen asks for the Bishop's expertise and experience to help deal with this request and the whole ecumenical dialogue in Walsingham
manuscript annotation 1: better say no because the only option is the Holy Spirit Chapel (which might appear insensitive) as the Bishop makes it a rule not to have non-Catholic Eucharist at the altars.
manuscript annotation 2: "Yes, I spoke to Peter. GD"
Fr Chapman advising the Bishop that due to on-going works at his Church he will be saying Mass at Wymondham Abbey for first 3 Sundays of December. The Vicar there has already obtained his own permissions. Since Fr Chapman already uses Anglican churches at Attleborough and Hethersett, he assumed that this would not cause a problem to the Bishop.
Chapman, Kenneth S Rev ( -1983)Has been asked to give the Anglican nuns at the Priory of Our Lady in Walsingham their retreat in November. Asks Bishop's permission to do this. All services will be conducted by an Anglican minister. Mother Julian, the superior, assures him that the parish priest would allow him to say Mass in the Catholic Church.
Green, Maurice Rev OSBThanking the bishop for card sent on his 11th anniversary [of ordination into Catholic Church]. Both Bishop Clark and Bishop Smith have been very patient and sympathetic to ex-Anglicans. Suggests send in a brochure to every boy and girl in the diocese on their 14th birthday. This would promote the idea of a religious life. Cites his own example of being in the Navy and not thinking of such a life until the chaplain asked him, dismissed it out of hand, but a few years later left the Navy and entered an Anglican seminary.
Heley, John RevStudent Cross pilgrimage to Walsingham. Easter celebration will have Anglican Eucharist (to which the Catholics have been invited) and a Catholic Midnight Mass (to which the Anglicans are invited). Unfortunately Good Friday may involve a single service at which both Anglican and Catholic forms of Eucharist are offered (at either end of the church). Parish priest cannot authorise this - so he is asking for the Bishop's approval and authorisation.
Hibbert, Giles Rev OP (1923-2013)Fr Hyland encloses a letter from Dept of Environment advising that the Church and Presbytery are to be included on the Historical Buildings list. He also mentions the "final score" of the votes for use of the Anglican Church in Hemsby - 4 to 1 in favour. But will continue with present arrangements until Spring Holiday.
Hyland, John G Rev OSAThe parish agree that they should accept the offer of All Saints. Fr Richmond has indicated this to Rev Isaacson. Will the Bishop complete the negotiations?
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)Whilst awaiting the Anglicans, Fr Richmond has had the Diocesan surveyor, Mr Toller, inspect All Saints. Report not yet available but the project is a safe one without any serious demands. Hopes the Bishop's hospital treatment is successful.
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)Rector assures Fr Richmond that there is no structural weakness - but no written report. Catholic architect looked this week and Fr Richmond is assured on this matter. The church will eventually need attention on the inside - plastering and repainting.
Looking forward to the Bishops visit on 8th June, an Anglo-American buffet on the lawn arranged.
Advising the Bishop that All Saints, Burnham Market, is becoming redundant and is being offered to Fr Richmond. The Bishop of Lynn is in favour. It is in very good condition, heated, 12th Century.
Richmond, Hugh Rev SDS (1912-)
