Enclosed estimate for trimming trees etc. Canon Mossey approached by neighbours, with no success. have then contacted the Bishop's office several times; the Bishop considers this work should be done as the trees cause neighbours trouble.
Annotation1: "Oh says Mossey. Parishioners have dealt with it."
Annotation 2: "Contacted Ben Hammond (8-1-83) asking him to "sort out" the problem. PW [Peter Wilson] does not accept that we have the responsibility to fork out £500 etc."
Personal donation of £25; perhaps a further donation later in the year. Hope you have success in obtaining grant from Historic Churches Fund or the Dept of the Environment.
CAFOD (1960-)Mr R A Hood (Administrator) writes that Fr Rimmer of Manchester mentioned that the Shrine at Walsingham had suffered damage during severe weather. This would require £5000 to repair. Are these facts correct, and are you obtaining reimbursement from insurance? He may make a personal donation to the Shrine.
CAFOD (1960-)Writing to the Bishop and Fr Bradley. Conrad Rawnsley describes himself as a heretic and religious abstinent but feels he is writing on behalf of the Burnham Market community against moving Fr Malecki on. He is a man of many parts and has demonstrated a "super human" ability to master many practical building skills. It is wrong to move him on before he can enjoy the rewards of his labours. If he were to stay then his knowledge & talents could be used to direct similar constructional and maintenance work in other dioceses.
Rawnsley, Conrad Franklin Commander RN (Rtd.) (1907 -1997)Fr Hammond and correspondent visited neighbours to discuss problem. Trees are too high and not managed, they block the light to their residence and so the church is responsible to sort it out. Observed that to correct the issue requires radical pruning which will entail significant cost - neither the Church nor the neighbours have sufficient funds. This was seen as unhelpful and the meeting ended.
CorrespondentMeeting points:
Fr Flynn established in Dersingham; Growth in the area to 9000 by 1991; go-ahead on building the church; Bishop to advise Architects; Priest's maintenance fund being set up and will transfer to Diocese; Bishop cannot guarantee to appoint a priest to Dersingham so the Catholic group will have responsibility. Press release attached.

Watkin, Aelred Rev MA FSA FRSA FRHistS (1918-1997)Application regarding repairs to Slipper Chapel needs Bishop's signature
Birch, Clive Rev SM LGSMChris Toller (of ????) undertook the 5 year review of Wymondham property. Nothing to worry, except to reserve £10,000 for re-roofing the Presbytery in a year or so. They considered future development of the parish in Attleborough, given that the parish has no property there. The old C of E Hall is to come to the market soon, Chris Toller sees this as an opportunity. So Fr Brown is raising it with the Bishop despite his lack of means. Sister Alies is soon to be out of hospital but will not be able to drive and it is thought that having her based in Attleborough would provide someone on the spot would provide support for local people.
Brown, Peter RevAd Clerum had underlined need to obtain permission for spending money. Mgr MacBride was vague about the guidelines. Fr Chapman identifies that a lot of maintenance is required: repainting church, presbytery and cottage; rewiring the cottage; addressing damp in the cottage; Hall needs work to meet Fire Service standards; an elm tree needs removing.
Personal note: keeping fairly well, but, off colour at times and things, at times, get on top of him. Not had a proper holiday - so perhaps it is his own fault.
Church is going to fall down unless remedial steps taken. Report & recommendations from Messrs Pynford who inspected the site at Mr John Cullen's request are being sent to the Bishop. Canon McBride is to be at the Finance Board in September - decision on money?
Manuscript annotation: ""a/d personally? reassurance that FB would discuss the matter - & PW could arrange an interview on site on Friday Sep 18th with Cullen."
Huntingdon District Council require:
- proof that the diocese is a registered charity
- trustee authority to complete the work
They will probably allow a grant. Estimated works cost £4,847.13 plus VAT of £726.99
Thanks for £200 cheque [from the Guild of Our Lady of Ransom?]. Mr Toller has advised on Ramsey church and will seek a builder for the re-pointing of the church.
Grace, George E L Rev (-1998)Following Bishop Grant's survey of churches and presbyteries it was decided that King's Lynn needed doing first. The work has to go before the finance board. Recommended solution is to replace gas fires with oil-fired boilers. Estimates have gone to Mr Boon the surveyor. Allflatt did the sanctuary for £400 less than others. More work to be done.
p.s "May I remind you about the question of re-consecrating the altar when you come on November 30th?"
Bishop had originally approved £300 expenditure; subsequent authoprity given fro urgent repairs not to exceed £500. Dept of Environment authorised addtional work - without confirming in writing and now will not pay anything towards it. The builders [Carter] may reduce their bill by £120; discussion on other adjjustments/contributions; parish may be left with £400 to make up. This is a "priceless little treasure of Our Blessed Lady's".
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Fr Hyland requests permission to install a public address system. Current system is poor and failing held together "by the grace of God and cellotape [sic]"! Parishioners want a new system and the quote from Yaxley's in Norwich for £911 sounds high but is necessary. This job is high priority.
Hyland, John G Rev OSAPuts forward a number of reasons for having a change in Mass scheduling to include anticipatory masses, to space them out to allow for the tide and parishioners crewing boats, to assist visitors to attend Mass. Confirms central heating is "to be done commercially!" Planning permission is needed for a boiler house. Wants a garage but cannot have the wood and asbestos construction as there are restrictions set by the planners. to protect the Conservation Area. Describes changes within the Church: tabernacle moved; wood oiled; wall painted; new Stations of the Cross installed (awaiting the fifteenth from Florence); re-siting of altar planned. Bishop of Lynn has given permission for the use of St Nicholas Church (but must wait for the new vicar to arrive).
Langley, Gerard Rev (-1992)Bishop's UEA talk was good - question time response not so.
Accept invitation to serve on the Ecumenical Commission. Church roof needs an architect to investigate some deterioration. Ad Clerum 9/80 (c) (1) - wording emphasises current position that many parish priests hold that the parish is "theirs", whereas Fr Langley thinks a co-responsibility with the parishioners is the ambition of Vatican II, etc.
