Bishop Dennis & Bishop Clark have agreed to be patrons. John Gimmer MP is interested as is Michael Irvine MP, Mr Amedee Turner MEP and his wife anxious to be associated with the project. Cardinal Hume has too many causes to support to take on another; however, perhaps Archbishop Runcie might become a patron.

The Nuclear power station will see 3,5000 men moving to Leiston and area in a few weeks. Pastoral provision had been made for "A" when it was built. John Lanning and Fr Hammond visited the site to discuss with the project officer. This time the workforce will be recruited locally; Irish labour is not being recruited; most will travel to the site daily; some 600 will be accommodated in a hostel in Leiston; information on catholic pastoral care will be made available to the workforce; a room will be available for priest to see staff. Fr Hammond is talking to Fr Gilmore of the Irish Chaplaincy Scheme in Britain in case a chaplaincy service is required.

Fr Hypher has returned to Southampton. Asking about the management of the various moves being planned - who has been told, when and about what? Particularly wishes to handle the changes at Beccles to properly explain the situation to the parish there. He has spoken to Tony Rogers [and another Tony] who agree that an announcement soon would be best.

The pending change in staffing at St Mary's Ipswich - the Bishop needs to consider the needs of the Tribunal. Fr Cleary only auditor in Ipswich denary - he has done 17 rogatory commissions. Outsourcing such work to Parish Priests will not be popular - cite an example of one outstanding for a year despite 4 reminders from himself and one from Southwark Tribunal. Bernard McCumiskey is still waiting for a response from the Bishop.

There are no unauthorised mass centres in this parish. The more ardent followers of the Tridentine Rite either follow Fr Bull or have ceased attending Mass.
Is this request prompted by the Lordships having second thoughts? A change of mind would have much harm: those who accept the changes will feel betrayed and the Tridentinists will feel vindicated. The authority of the Church will again be called into question and appear weak. "The very authority vested in the Holy Father will seem to have moved to the 'Prophet in out Time', Archbishop Lefebvre."

Asking permission to have a private retreat at Lowestoft Convent (which he can reach by train) instead of attending the Bishop's in Massingham. He gets tired driving the car long distances and his controlled diet will make catering a nuisance. Things may be more stable in the future.

  1. Description of the visit by Archbishop Barbarito to the region.
  2. Use of laity for vital tasks because the diocese has too few priests. Bishop Clark called a special assembly to discuss the topic. Despite recent ordinations, there is going to be a shortfall of priests.
