Deacon Alan Middup writes. Expressing concern about the news of the Augustinian withdrawal from Yarmouth. Deep gratitude to Fr John Reid with his forward thinking and catholic spirit, an inspiration to many. Any new priest should give grave considerations to the Ecumenical dimension in the work in Great Yarmouth.

Fr Ahearne had written to the Bishop on 5th March to say he had been elected Provincial of the Anglo-Scottish Province, and a Chapter would take place on 27th March. They have made changes in personnel agreed at a Provincial Chapter at Austin Friars in Carlisle on 4/5 April. The community at St Mary's Great Yarmouth will be:

Advising the Bishop that Fr Hartnett has replaced Fr Quinlan - believes faculties are in order.

Rev Barry Tomlinson, CofE chaplain at new District General Hospital, wishes to consult the Bishop on the request from Muslim staff members wishing to use the Chapel recently dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich.

Deanery minutes - next meeting February 22 in Gorleston (Fr Tom settling down there. Commissioned 7 Eucharistic ministers in Bungay for "Richard" whilst Bishop was convalescing. "I'm getting the feel of what the Dean should do." Looking forward to Bishop coming on Sunday 13 December [1986] to say 10.30 Mass, present 5 Benemerenti [Papal Medal], receive 25 Confirmation candidates, which he hopes will be next November during the Visitation.

OSA happy to comply with the Bishop's request that they stay at least until September 1995. To help planning relocation, can the Bishop say when he is likely to replace the friars? Will probably reduce numbers as the time gets nearer. OSA regrets having to withdraw but they not longer have the fit men to maintain commitments.

Fr Hyland celebrates his 25th Anniversary of his Ordination. Formal celebrations on Wednesday 8 October with mass at 7.30pm followed by a reception. Invites Bishop to attend.

Since Fr Hyland is already the only "official RC Chaplain" perhaps the Bishop should nominate him as chaplain to the new District General Hospital.

Now established at St John Stone's in Woodvale, Southport. Moving house has been a terrible headache; a bit lost in the new surroundings but now have time to write. Official appointments now vacant as a result of his leaving Yarmouth: Chairman of Governors, St Mary's School; Chaplain to new hospital, Gorleston; Confessor to Sisters of St Mary's Convent, Lowestoft; Governor of St Edmund's School, Gorleston; Chaplain to Knights of Saint Columba (KSC) Council 534, Yarmouth & Gorleston.

Fr Hyland requests permission to install a public address system. Current system is poor and failing held together "by the grace of God and cellotape [sic]"! Parishioners want a new system and the quote from Yaxley's in Norwich for £911 sounds high but is necessary. This job is high priority.

Fr Hyland encloses a letter from Dept of Environment advising that the Church and Presbytery are to be included on the Historical Buildings list. He also mentions the "final score" of the votes for use of the Anglican Church in Hemsby - 4 to 1 in favour. But will continue with present arrangements until Spring Holiday.

Bishop arrives after 8pm, 13 November, dines and stays the night. Schedule for Sunday:

£500 for Cathedral Appeal. Sorry not more - enhanced by church funds - people not keen to give but not for the want of asking. Better luck next year when less to be spent on restoring St Mary's, perhaps.

Provincial (Fr Loughran) notes that Fr Dowling is taking over on Sunday 10 May. Following Bishop's concern about two men being moved - Fr Quinlan will stay to help Fr Dowling settle in. Confidence in Fr Curran's ability to maintain continuity and he is being made Prior of the community there.

Thanks Bishop for his kind and generous letter. Spoken to Sean and Matt, good emerged from the episode in healing wounds. In God's plan, we have to do a little suffering for the body - good to see the results. See you at Clare next week.
