Part of The Sacred Heart Parish, St Ives

The writer is directed by the Board of Trustees to ask for a reply to their letter of 15 December 1909. Fr Purcell is asked what arrangements he has made regarding the properties from which he receives rent. The writer call to Fr Purcell's notice that if the properties are not kept in good repair then "Mr Pauling, the great benefactor of your mission may cease to take further interest in the work at St Ives".
[The letter ends at this point - it is an unsigned draft]

Fr Ketterer writes from Gt. Billing, Northamptonshire: The Studio had been difficult to let and when he informed the Bishop he was told to do what he could. He let to Mr Smith with no formal agreement (as supported by Mr King, Mr Pauling's agent) and sub-letting was not mentioned. He did not liking this way of doing things.

Fr Purcell is adamant that the Board of Trustees are not helping his Mission by their propositions. They should tell Mr Skeeles whether or not they are going to support his suggestion. Their inference that Fr Purcell is responsible for the neglect of the properties does not go down well. They can think that if they wish, but whether they are justified to do so is another matter. Fr Purcell states that his knowledge of Mr Pauling is that he would not accuse anyone, openly or covertly, of such neglect. Neither would he think that St Ives is in a position to spend money on repairs. Caustically, Fr Purcell says he might be mistaken that an objective of the Board is to assist Poor Missions ("with barely sufficient income"). Does the board say it is his fault and he must "personally pay the expense?".

Fr Wilson apologies to Bishop for not getting his returns back earlier; the Canon had spoken to him. Fr Wilson asks for advice on the situation that now faces him with regard to the Studio (bought by Mr Pauling at the start of the Mission). Let by Fr Ketterer to Mr Smith, who died in June, for 3 or 5 years at £10 per annum. Mr Smith has sub-let to Mr Cotman for 3 years at £20 a year from last Michaelmas. When Fr Wilson came last February, the rent had not been paid. Mr Smith's affairs were bankrupt and so the offer was 7/- in the £, which was accepted by the creditors. The rent was paid on 1st December. Mr Day made a proposal over the rent but Fr Wilson did not understand what was being said even after several attempts at requesting clarification. The Studio had been let to the County Council for cookery lessons and some expenses have arisen from that with other repairs. Fr Wilson thinks this should all be settled prior to him taking back the lease. Perhaps a letter from the Diocesan Solicitor might elicit a clearer explanation from Mr Day (who "... has a pretty general reputation for sharp practice...").

Part of The Sacred Heart Parish, St Ives

Typed (by Fr Nesden?) extract from "St Ives Guide". Short description of the Catholic community in St Ives from 1843 to 1902. Specific mention of the transportation of St Andrew's church from Cambridge to St Ives.
Fr Nesden adds notes:

  • the original dedication can be seen in the windows above the altar - one dedicated to St Andrew; another to St Felix.
  • the route for the barges was via the River Cam, to the Great Ouse and then the quay in St Ives
  • The window to St George commemorates "his confirmation in 1859" which may refer to Mr Pauling.
