Suggest Wednesday July 2nd - arriving on the day as have another appointment in the area. Sorry to hear about Dr Helsham, his Jesuit brother gave a poor account of it. Cyril Banham is doing well - have to curb his enthusiasm to keep him within his health compass.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Cyril is in a good place for him at Woburn Sands and will stay there for a good time. Good idea for his sister to move in with him and to get him out of "lodgings"
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)"Native" clergy are an advantage as they know the area and its people. Suggest one of three seminaries for Cyril: St Edmund's in Ware, St Mary's Oscott and Ushaw College. £100 per annum premium at each. Ask Cyril to forward references.

Making a case for the ordination of Cyril Banham to be held in Beccles rather than the Bishop's preferred place in Norwich. Opportunity to influence the people of Beccles through the ceremony and Bishop's presence and to support two potential boys for priesthood. Fr Campbell can arrange for five priests for certain and with the Bishop's MC that makes six. Enough surely?
manuscript annotation: "Answered. It is all a matter of priests. Norwich has 6 to begin with. But Beccles has the prior claim if you can get the necessary no. of priests. Fr Squirrell is the MC for the diocese in your parts. Get a hold of him & let him tell you how many priests are required. Please don't let Beccles think itself in disgrace! Jan 13/26."
Good news regarding Cyril Banham's ordination. Have written to Fr Squirrell re number of priests required. Requests return of the papers associated with the "Chaplow & Such" case as the woman involved has asked for them. Statistics included [not present] do not include Confirmed - ten from Southwold and one from Lowestoft
Campbell, Henry Martin Dom OSBCyril Banham has asked for banns for his sub-deaconate to be published at St Benet's. Asks the bishop about whether this is correct - Canon 988 not clear on this.
Manuscript annotation: "No need to publish banns in the case of C Banham for S. Orders. May 27/25."
Opportunity for the working people to see the ceremony. Sufficient priest secured; Frs Banham SJ and Miller are certainties, himself and Fr Vermeulin [sic], Fr Helsham SJ is being asked for from the Provincial SJ. Need a supply for Fr Squirrell. Enclosed the Bishop's letter [not present].
Campbell, Henry Martin Dom OSBJohn E Coney (writing from St Joseph's, Grange Rd, Beccles) in response to a request form the Bishop about Fr Banham. Doctor has cleared him for work but wants to see him in six weeks. When the house is ready can Fr Banham return? The district nurse will attend to his side which has not yet healed.

Lengthy description of the money problems for Fr Banham as his outgoings exceed his income as he has not been paid any money by the Estate [Cary Elwes'?] Agent since he went off sick. This means he cannot pay for the supply priest nor for the housekeeper. His brother-in-law means to go to Billing and take charge of the house until Fr Banham can return.
manuscript annotation: "Please return"
Doctor has seen him - relapse of old chest trouble, vert ill, but not got consumption. He should be up and about in a day or two.
CorrespondentA family visit to Billing found her son, Fr Cyril Banham, very unwell. Took him to see a doctor in Northampton who said he should rest immediately for 4 to six weeks and return to Beccles to be treated by his own doctor and nursed at home. Tries to inform the Bishop but took him home.
