Bishop does not wish Fr Flynn to take Mrs Gregory's cottage next to Fr Flynn. Suggests he contact Fr Parker in Felixstowe for suitable accommodation.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Fr Malone can set his mind at rest regarding Fr Flynn - St Michael's Lodge is let indefinitely. Who will you get instead of Mrs Gregory?
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Taking into consideration Fr Flynn's health, the doctor's certificate, family worries and belated confession of culpability. However, cannot overlook the failures in duty which had happened before - how many times without detection? You cannot expect your flock to make sacrifices if you do not. You had not acknowledged your intemperance but it is a cause. You are under obedience to discontinue immediately all use of alcoholic stimulants - another omission of Sunday Mass will mean the deprivation of your cure.
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Having heard from a reliable source that Fr Flynn had missed celebrating mass on Passion, Palm and Low Sundays, omissions of duty that Fr Flynn had failed to inform the Bishop about, the Bishop demands a full explanation in accordance with canon law 1947ff and 2182ff.
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)[undated, unsigned] [very shaky hand] "My Lord, I think you ought to know about Fr Flynn here. He is a very ill man and something ought to be done for him. He only has Mass on Sunday - and these looks as if he might die on the altar. Only last week he was over to take a wedding but went to bed in the hotel at once, too ill to do it. I am only a visitor here and therefore it is not my business but it is very serious I beg to remain one of your Lordships flock."
Correspondent"I hereby testify that Fr C S Flynn has been under my care suffering from gastritis & neurasthenia which had prevented him taking his services on two occasions" D J Rygate MRCS LRCP MA
CorrespondentDr Philip Marshall MRCS MRCP DPH reporting on Fr Flynn's health and well being. He describes Fr Flynn as an active, inquisitive and intelligent man who needs not to be idle for 9/10s of the year but engaged in a busy Mission. Many think well of him. He has been frank about his past problems with alcohol - he suffers from Intestinal Toxaemia which is exacerbated by drink. His life does not engage him, but makes him mope and become melancholic.
Correspondent"My Lord, Fr Flynn of this town has asked me to write to you as to his condition - This is the 2nd time I have been called in for the same trouble - gastritis gastric catarrh or nervous depression - He is now progressing well but I have advised to take complete rest to thoroughly restore himself - He is a very highly strung and neurotic patient - but has no organic disease to account for these attacks - I would be very happy to insure his life - I think I have cheered him up & that he will return practically fit from his holidays - Very faithfully yours D J Rygate Surgeon"
manuscript annotation: "Should a man of his temperament take alcoholic drink, or abstain from it rigorously under all circumstances, esp. fro whisky & other ardent spirits?"
CorrespondentW E H Bull saw Fr Flynn this week - he is ill with influenza and his nervous system is completely run down. Consider it a personal favour if the Bishop gives his request urgent consideration for Fr Flynn to have two months off for complete rest. Fr Flynn leads a lonely life and this is worse since his sister died in December.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. as also Ketterer C report annexed"
Visited Fr Flynn, found him in a very weak condition looking an absolute wreck. Quite clear that Fr Flynn is not drinking - despite some of the comments made by others; he also takes great pride in the church and his house, again contrary to others' comments. Believes that Mr Bull was mistaking a previous condition's consequences with Fr Flynn's current situation.
Ketterer, Constantine Rev (-1940)Cathedraticum [annual payment to Bishop] cheque enclosed [not present. £2.10 from Frs Page, Allen, Ketterer, Rigby & Eeles.
manuscript annotation: "Sent receipt. Asked if Fr Flynn and Drage turned up"
Cheque for £2.10 being the Cathedraticum from Fr Rigby, Fr Ketterer, Fr Allen, Fr Page & Canon Eeles. Other claim exemption. Discusses arrangements for masses especially when the doctor considers he can do low masses but is concerned about the long fast - perhaps the Canon could take some liquid nourishment between masses. Fr Flynn was looking well today at the conference. Absentees were Fr Page (with a chill), Fr Allen ( Children's Entertainment) & Fr Drage.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)No mass at Hunstanton due to Fr Flynn being ill. He has arranged for a Dominican Father from Leicester to say Mass - but Fr Flynn may be able to say it too. Send faculties including duplication if necessary.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Sent necessary faculties straight to Fr Flynn."
Letter: Fr Flynn's health described - stomach lining and neuritis in one arm.
Fr Filmer, on a Mission here, sends his regards.
Envelope: addressed to the Bishop; manuscript annotation: "re Flynn's health. No answer"
Fr Flynn's letter is attached; Fr Drage has not been seen nor heard from. He has not been to any conference since he was at Oxborough. A notice [of the conference] had been sent to him.
manuscript annotation: "Accept Fr Flynn's excuse. So find Fr Drage has [?] true, tho' so close to Lynn, Am at Swaffham on the Ap. 29-30"..." go to pay Fr Flynn a visit. I go to St. [?][?] May2".
Fr Eeles has never met Mr Holmes. The first he knew of the mother was through the Headmistress. Fr Flynn was visited and is much better.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. He takes a high tone! Try to see him & bring him to his senses, as we cannot submit to such dictation. The Bishop, his nuisances [?] cannot be transferred on in such a high handed way. I enclose a dispensation in this case which you can use at your discretion for when he has seen the error of his ways. Aug 27/25."
Advisory note to the Bishop. Visited Fr Flynn and found him very much down after the "flu". Doctor suggests he gets away for a short rest.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)For last 3 or 4 weeks Fr Flynn has been at Oxborough and Fr Dnage[?] at Hunstanton. He went to Hunstanton for a wedding but became so ill he could take no part in it. He returned to Oxborough for Sunday but was unable to say Mass, which Fr Ketterer did instead.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)Doctor's diagnosis. [patient, Fr Flynn] on slop foods. No Sunday duties for two Sundays at least.
CorrespondentFr Flynn has had a thorough nervous breakdown and is in a very weak state. Not been well since he came to Hunstanton and was steadily getting worse. Agree that he must go away for a fortnight - suggest with Fr Squirrell for ten days. Fr Garnett suggests he stays in Hunstanton for that time to take care of things and explain to the congregation. Can the Bishop make arrangements for Wellingborough? Is he content with the suggestions?
postscript: "Father Flynn wish me to express his apology & regret that he is not yet in a fit state to write to you a full explanation in answer to your enquiry, but will do so later."
Annotation at top of first page: "Wire - Bishop consents to arrangement proposed."
