The Conference of Bishops meet in November and the question will be put on the agenda. Copied to Bishop Clark and Bishop Butler who are members of ARCIC.
Heenan, John Carmel Rev (1905-1975)Collaboration and co-operation in the work of the Lord. Speak in his own name - not an emissary from the Holy See nor the Conference of RC Bishops in England and Wales. A divided Christianity is a scandal.
"When you and I as Christians affirm the dignity of man, we mean more than does the humanist, the Marxist or the liberal agnostic. We affirm two truths." ".. man is made in the image of God....the Word has become flesh and dwells among us." Global problems which seriously threaten the well-being of the human race - hunger, military spending, war. "But even our moral influence as Christians is diminished by our evident disunity." IN the Common Declaration (29 April 1977) Pope Paul & Archbishop Coggan took up the idea voiced by ARCIC which worked closely on the Eucharist, Ministry and Authority in the Church - be reminded that neither Church has ratified the three Agreed Statements. "May I suggest that we must not only listen to each other, but together listen to what the Spirit may be saying."
Welcome to stay for the event in the UEA (University of East Anglia) on 28 October 1979. Preparing for an ARCIC meeting in Venice. "Dick" [Stewart] is going to SPUC in the New Year - Dennis Corbishley has considerable practice in the ecumenical circuit.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)chacteristic of a priest is to do Christ's will; 1979 more burdensome than 1978; gratitude for your ministry; Financial Stability: East Anglia holding is own - not least financially; Vocations: our approach, insights into the pattern and shapeof the future; Priestly Formation Commission; Diocesan Structure: Deanery becoming a real unit of operation; ideas for setting-up the Diocesan Pastoral Council; 1980: a real killer - National Pastoral Council, ARCIC final report due; reducing involvement with the "church-at-large", feels a confidence about the approachign 1980.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Into 1985; The Christmas Proclamation; Pastoral Programme - Council of Priests ministry; Identify Check - "our relationship to one another and to our people"; ARCIC 1 - Agreed statement on Ministry and Ordination; Overlappping Tasks - Youth, Social Welfare, Schools; The Mission 'Ad Extra' - needs of overseas missions; Greetings and Gratitude
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop is attending an ARCIC meeting in Venice. Normal route to requests a papal blessing is via the parish priest.
Bishop's OfficeDiscussion document on the proposed Roman document on Mixed Marriages. Whereas such a marriage is stated as being "illicit"; this implies that they are "valid". The requirement to not place impediments in the way of the Catholic partner, may be seen as unreasonable since the non-Catholic partner's head of church makes no such request. All that has to be done is to attend confession, after the marriage in a non-catholic church, and then can access the sacraments like any other.
Has an ecumenical impact for [Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC)].
Suggests several potential publications in which to place the pamphlet. The three Tablet articles are to be sent to members of ARCIC.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Copies of articles sent to all ARCIC members. Like to see Tillard's paper on Priesthood and Ministry.
R [René] Lourentine's great study of the first two chapters of St Luke's Gospel hints that St Luke's information may have come to him, via the circle of which St John was the centre, from Our Lady. Impressed that while St Luke presents information representing her point of view, the infancy narratives of St Matthew is through the eyes of St Joseph.
Personal: thanking the Cardinal for presiding over the debate. Concerned about the ability of colleagues to rise to the occasion and avoid the charge of "Fortress Catholicism", otherwise "we'll dwindle (yes, we)". Perhaps Bishop Clark's remarks were a spill over form the days of ARCIC in the 70s; but, need to those with imagination and initiative to pursue the aims and objectives of ARCIC and unity as a whole.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Covering letter for a note on the proposal for handling mixed marriages. A stumbling block. May not stay on the International Commission [ARCIC?] is the Cardinal's proposals go through.
Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)Will try Theological Studies for the pamphlet. Good idea to send Butler's three Tablet articles to members of ARCIC. Working with Dick Stewart on the presentation for the Episcopal Conference [of England and Wales ECEW)]. Working on the pamphlet "The Virgin Birth" and hopes that he has not bitten off more than he can chew, but it will need much chewing before making it simpler.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)FCP has a membership of 2,000. Bishop of Elmham (Bishop Clark) gave a talk to the Peterborough Diocesan Association about ARCIC agreed statements. Wish to ask a question: "What do you now more require of us to make possible a reconciliation between our two churches?"
Federation of Catholic PriestsList of roles:
Chairman of ECEW
Member of Theological Commission
Chairman of CTS (suspended - but David [Norris?] is pressing me not to make this final)
Walsingham commitments
ARCIC - still rolling on
Enclose accounts for trip to Denmark - fares, conference fees, lodging and food
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)4 questions with answers...
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)"The annual week of Prayer for Christian Unity has become in recent years something of a convention. It is in danger of being taken for granted." Common devotion to Christ; we belong to Him; he is our peace and reconciliation; have to face obstacles ahead honestly and courageously; the Pope's visit; ARCIC discussions. "Pope Paul VI once said: 'The Pope, you well know, is undoubtedly the gravest obstacle in the path of ecumenism'". "Reconciliation of ministries cannot be cheaply bought, or sought for simple convenience." "I am convinced that these three themes - Peter, Apostolicity and Sacraments - are themes which in one way or another all the Churches are now talking about."
Hume, George Basil Rev (1923-1999)Three days in Rome as Co-Moderator of the Joint Working Group (between the Holy See and the World Council of Churches [WCC]). Summary of discussion with Bishop Duprey: Cardinal Hume handled the matter admirably; not to support the "Papua New Guinea Solution" (Archivist would not let Bishop Clark look at the Papua New Guinea file); hostile to Conditional Ordination; explore Supplemental Ordination?; As CDF [The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Curia, Vatican] did not accept ARCIC approach to Apostolic Succession there may be a problem.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Possibilities - for 1992; Alright so far - after 15 years, a rolling car story; The Scene across the Country - alarming decrease in Catholic numbers; The Decade - wide range of activities and areas, unable to define the work of a Commission for Evangelisation ; The Practice - a liturgy to celebrate, revealed mysteries of faith, "all for concilitarity and firmly adhere to it - but I am leary of any synodal structure"; Programme of Evangelisation - "junk" served up in so many churches, a list of some hymns to be consigned to the outer darkness, "admit there is a danger of riding a hobby horse to death"; ARCIC Response - "a great opportunity was lost...", incolvement of all Chruistian Churches is demanded; Finance - Hadrian Mule, Diocesan finances never easy to grasp at one sitting, have not enough money to do everything so budgetting and prioritising is fundamental; DDF [Diocesan Development Fund] - decisions to be taken; Offerings - frequently too low, successes in the Shrine complex and finanacing of the rebuilding of the Cathedral
